Avengers: Infinity War will be filmed in Edinburgh and Glasgow

Avengers: Infinity War I & II will have a combined budget of $500 million and will be filmed back-to-back in Scotland. Government of Scotland estimates $10 million local earnings from the movie shoot

The third movie in the Marvel Avengers series, Avengers: Infinity War, will be filmed in Edinburgh, Glasgow and the Highlands.

Filming for the £400 million superhero comic-book blockbuster will start on February 28th, and is expected to last for six months – boosting Scotland’s economy by £10 million.

A Disney and Marvel collaboration, the movie will feature a star-studded cast, with Hollywood superstars such as Samuel L Jackson, Robert Downey Jr and Scarlett Johansson all taking lead roles.

Benedict Cumberbatch will return to the movie as Dr Strange, who he played in the 2016 movie of the same name. Liv Tyler, of Lord of the Rings fame, is rumoured to returning as Betty Ross, who she hasn’t played since the Incredible Hulk, and Inverness-born Karen Gillian is thought to be preparing to star as supervillain Nebula.

It is thought that Infinity War will be the largest movie ever made in Scotland, dwarfing Brad Pitt’s 2011 zombie film World War Z, which had a cast of 1800 and generated £3.3 million for the Scottish economy in the 17 days it was filmed in Glasgow.

The Scottish Labour culture spokesperson Lewis MacDonald commented: “The fact such a successful franchise will be filmed in Scotland will excite the fans but also provide a welcome boost to the economy.

“I hope the producers take advantage of the skills people in Scotland have to offer, so as many local people as possible can find work and Scotland’s fantastic creative community can go from strength to strength.”

The third Avengers superheroes movie is one of 2017’s most highly anticipated after the previous two films grossed £3 billion at the box office.

A crossover comic-book film, it will feature superheroes including Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Incredible Hulk, and is set to be released in the UK on February 28.
