Kick-Ass and X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn's reboot of Flash Gordon has drafted Thor and I Am Legend screenwriter Mark Protosevich to rewrite the 20th Century Fox-based sci-fi film.

Protosevich made the announcement of his involvement with Flash Gordon on his Facebook page. Via Hitfix:

"I can't wait to get started and if you're curious about the take? I'm not saying a word. All I'll say is this - it will be nothing like any version of Flash Gordon you've seen."

The project was originally scripted by Star Trek Beyond's initial writing team of J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay.

Protosevich and Vaughn had collaborated on Thor before Vaughn dropped out of directing it. Protosevich also worked on Legendary's long-planned feature film adaptation of the video game franchise Mass Effect, and also scripted Joel Schumacher's unproduced, darker sequel to Batman & Robin that would have featured Scarecrow and Harley Quinn.

Created by Alex Raymond, Flash Gordon was a Depression-era hero of comic strips and big screen serials who spawned live-action and animated TV incarnations in the ensuing decades as well as a cult classic 1980 movie (which was paid tribute to in Seth MacFarlane's Ted) and further comics series.
