The Walking Dead season 5 has been eventful, to say the least. Action, some good character drama, truly brutal and horrific violence, and some shocking deaths. And that’s just at the mid-season mark.

The show returns on February 8th, and clearly from the clip above Rick Grimes, Maggie, and the rest of the survivors are still reeling from the death of Beth in the mid-season 5 finale. The trauma in the clip above is palpable, as no doubt many fans are still in shock themselves at how suddenly, and violently, Beth was taken out.

What’s more intriguing about the clip, however, is the particular visual style that’s presented. The retro style with the overexposure edits and jump cuts is something we don’t typically see from the show, hinting that The Walking Dead could perhaps be getting more sophisticated in its level of visual storytelling. The effect isn’t just artsy for the sake of it; it helps to convey the surreal feeling of shock and trauma the group must be experiencing at that moment.

We also learn that Beth’s hospital BFF Noah (Tyler James Williams) had (or has?) a twin. No doubt, more dramatic developments along those lines will be unveiled, when the show returns to the airwaves next week.

The Walking Dead returns Sunday, February 8th on AMC.
