Vikings star Katheryn Winnick continues to express interest in playing Black Canary in the DC Extended Universe. Warner Bros. has been in full swing establishing their burgeoning shared superhero universe that officially began with Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice last year. While the world’s finest heroes will unite later this year in Snyder’s Justice League, there are countless other heroes out there that are awaiting their big screen debut.

Considering just how many movies the studio has in development, it seems strange to think that there are currently no plans to bring the Green Arrow and Black Canary into the shared universe, especially acknowledging how popular the characters have been on the small screen. Still, that hasn’t stopped fans from wishing to see Charlie Hunnam play Oliver Queen (something he’s actually open to doing), as well as Katheryn Winnick hoping to suit up as Dinah Drake.

In March 2016, the Vikings star told fans on Twitter that she had been “itching” to try out the Canary Cry. Then in December, she expressed interest in playing the Black Canary in the DC Extended Universe. It appears her interest hasn’t waned; in fact, it has only escalated.

While the Black Canary has been a staple character in the DC Universe ever since her inception, it’s doubtful that she would be able to carry her own movie. Perhaps the best way to bring her into the fold, then, would be to include her in a Birds of Prey film. The character’s relationship with Barbara Gordon, aka Batgirl/Oracle, has been at the core of the Birds of Prey comics ever since the beginning. And considering that Joss Whedon is scheduled to helm a Batgirl movie for Warner Bros, perhaps if that does well then there might be a Birds of Prey adaptation in store, one that has Winnick in a leading role as the famed superheroine.

Although there are currently no apparent plans to bring the Black Canary into the DC Extended Universe, there is no shortage of female superheroes in the shared universe for fans to look forward to. Gal Gadot will be reprising her role as Diana Prince in Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman next month, which is shaping up to be a much-needed hit for the studio. Then there’s Whedon’s Batgirl movie, and not to mention the fact that David Ayer will be helming a Gotham City Sirens adaptation sometime in the future. We’ll just have to wait and see if the studio can find a place for Black Canary somewhere in there.
