A Split/Unbreakable crossover is officially on the way! M. Night Shyamalan regained the favor of audiences earlier this year with Split – a movie which secretly took place in the Unbreakable world – and the director has now announced info on the crossover, titled Glass. Unbreakable is already 17 years old at this point and found Samuel L. Jackson and Bruce Willis secretly within a comic book universe. Fast forward to this year, and Shyamalan did the same thing with Split, revealing that James McAvoy’s Beast is another super powered individual.

The end of Split brought back Willis as David Dunn – the man who cannot break – and teased that there was a possibility for a crossover/sequel for both films to happen down the road. Well, Universal has confirmed this to be true with a title, cast, and release date.

Universal has officially confirmed they are moving forward with Glass and will bring back characters from both Split and Unbreakable. Not only that, but fans will not have to wait too much longer to see what happens next as the film has already landed an early 2019 release. Along with confirming the cast and date, Universal has provided the first synopsis.

M. Night Shyamalan brings together the narratives of two of his standout originals—2000’s UNBREAKABLE and last year’s SPLIT—in one explosive, all-new comic-book thriller: GLASS. From UNBREAKABLE, Bruce Willis returns as David Dunn as does Samuel L. Jackson as Elijah Price, known also by his pseudonym Mr. Glass. Joining from SPLIT are James McAvoy, reprising his role as Kevin Wendell Crumb and the multiple identities who reside within, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Casey Cooke, the only captive to survive an encounter with The Beast.

Following the conclusion of SPLIT, GLASS finds Dunn pursuing Crumb’s superhuman figure of The Beast in a series of escalating encounters, while the shadowy presence of Price emerges as an orchestrator who holds secrets critical to both men.

This is news that many have long been waiting to hear, and only became more of a request following the success of Split. It is still one of the best received movies of the year and brought Shyamalan properly “back.” Now, he has the chance to make a sequel he has long wanted to do that will actually combine two of his more well-received movies together. Hopefully this opportunity will turn out better than other long awaited sequels have in recent memory. Shymalan’s been working on the Glass script for months now and clearly has a sense of where he wants to take this story (and these characters), in the next chapter.

Since the ending of Split directly shows Dunn watching news reports on Casey’s escape and the threat that Crumb/Beast, it is not terribly surprising that the crux of Glass will be between Willis and McAvoy’s characters. The synopsis teases how Mr. Glass will come into play, but makes no mention of where Anya Taylor-Joy fits. As Dunn begins this hunt for Crumb, he will more than likely seek out Casey to see how she was able to escape him. She was such a major piece of Split that fans of that film will surely want to see her in a larger role.

While the size of the various roles can be debated and may change depending on which film or character a particular person prefers, the chance to see Shyamalan’s full “trilogy” is reason enough to get excited at this stage. With both films already offering up great versions of his signature twists, it should be fun to see what else he has imagined for Glass.
