Sony’s Venom marks two weeks of filming with a photo of Tom Hardy taking a break from the set of the movie. Earlier this year, Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios released the first film as part of their deal to bring Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe – Jon Watts’ Spider-Man: Homecoming – more than a year after Tom Holland debuted as Peter Parker in Captain America: Civil War. However, while Sony and Marvel are sharing Spider-Man, Sony retains the rights to a number of Spidey-related characters, including Venom.

So in an effort to launch their own Marvel universe, Sony announced a Venom solo movie starring Hardy, as well as Silver and Black, which will follow fellow Spider-Man villains Silver Sable and Black Cat. There’s been some confusion as to whether Venom is connected to the MCU – though the best guess is that it’s not – and how exactly Sony plans to launch a series of movies starring Spider-Man characters without the web-slinging superhero himself. Still, in an effort to start building buzz around Ruben Fleischer’s superhero movie, Sony announced the start of filming on Venom a few weeks ago with a photo from the set. Now, the production marks two weeks of filming in a similar manner.

On the official Venom movie Twitter, Sony posted a photo of Hardy taking a break from set in what appears to be his trailer. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be any hint of the Venom suit or makeup in the photo, but it’s possible his outfit and arm wraps are part of his character’s costume rather than being casual clothes (though that seems unlikely). Take a look at the photo below:

With the rise of social media, we’ve seen more and more directors, cast members, and studios use sites like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook to release official set photos or promotional images. In fact, Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds has used Twitter to reveal casting announcements as well as first looks at Domino and Cable – two new mutants joining Deadpool 2, on which Reynolds is also a producer. Ron Howard, who took over directorial duties on Lucasfilm’s Solo: A Star Wars Story, released set photos on Twitter to tease the production and calm the waters after the project’s director upset. Plus, short teasers are often released on Instagram announce trailer debuts.

All that’s to say Sony seems to be taking a proactive approach to slowly building buzz for Venom, which has already been somewhat plagued by debate of whether the film’s titular villain can be a worthy lead without being able to battle Spider-Man. Not to mention, the studio’s take on Venom in Spider-Man 3 was largely criticized by fans, and Sony’s last attempt at a Spider-Man movie universe was a non-starter after The Amazing Spider-Man 2 failed to perform as well as expected with critics and fans, and at the box office.

Of course, while some fans may be worried about Venom, there are still many looking forward to seeing what Fleischer and Hardy have come up with for their film. Although it may not be connected to the MCU, 20th Century Fox has obviously found success with their catalogue of mutants and a film franchise that doesn’t follow exactly in Marvel’s MCU footsteps. At this point, it’s still early in the production process of Venom and fans know very little about what Sony has planned. But with filming continuing on, fans may not have to wait long for the first look at Hardy suited up as Venom or, at least, another teasing photo from the set.
