The release of a movie starring Tom Hanks is typically a major event. America's Dad is almost always a guaranteed box office draw, as his appeal stretches across cultural lines and barriers. With the release of Inferno overseas, it now appears that Hanks' popularity is as strong as ever. The film has not even opened in domestic markets yet, but it has already made a killing at the international box office.

According to a brand new report from Deadline, it appears that Ron Howard's Inferno has already made a boatload of money overseas. Against a $75 million production budget, the third installment in the Robert Langdon film series has already garnered $94.8 million, and it hasn't even premiered in the United States yet. Based on current estimates, Inferno is expected to cross the $100 million mark overseas by the time it debuts in North America.

Compared to other recent literary adaptations, Inferno appears to be off to a solid start. While the Tom Hanks-fronted thriller is poised to do amazing business, the recent Lee Child adaptation, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, hasn't fared quite as well. In the face of lukewarm reviews, Never Go Back opened second at the domestic box office this past weekend, losing out to Tyler Perry's Boo! A Madea Halloween.

It's not surprising to learn that Inferno has already performed this well with audiences. The sheer amount of talent behind the project is enough to get crowds into theaters. With Ron Howard behind the camera, and Tom Hanks in the leading role, the film is one of the most prestigious affairs to hit theaters in recent weeks. The film is also helped by its incredibly talented supporting cast, which features Felicity Jones and Ben Foster.

Beyond the talent associated with the project, there's also a built-in fan base that's pretty much guaranteed to check the film out. Inferno is based upon the wildly popular (and wildly lucrative) Dan Brown series of Robert Langdon books, and as such, pretty much anybody who enjoyed The Da Vinci Code or Angels & Demons will want to see it. The film follows Tom Hanks' Professor Langdon as he travels the globe in a desperate search to uncover the mystery of Inferno -- a mysterious and man-made plague that could potentially wipe out half of the world's population.
