Netflix has found its new director for the upcoming movie adaptation of popular video game Tom Clancy’s The Division. The film was initially set to be directed by David Leitch, whose past work includes John Wick, Atomic Blonde, and Deadpool 2, but he later stepped out of the director’s chair and will just serve as the movie’s producer now. Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain will star in The Division, which has no official release date.

The video game version of The Division centers around a mysterious virus spread on paper money during Black Friday, which quickly brings about the societal collapse of major cities across America. A secret group of government operatives, known as “The Division,” are activated in response. Reportedly, the movie’s story will be largely the same. Despite being part of Ubisoft’s Tom Clancy game series, the Division games have little to do with the famed author and are not based on any of Clancy’s actual works.

In the wake of David Leitch’s departure as director of The Division, Rawson Marshall Thurber has been tapped to step up and helm the project, per Collider. Thurber has previously written and directed films like Dodgeball: An Underdog Story, Central Intelligence, Skyscraper, and the upcoming Netflix original Red Notice. The latter three of those films all star Dwayne Johnson, though the former wrestler is not currently attached to The Division. Thurber will reportedly write the script for The Division with Ellen Shanman.

Netflix’s The Division movie has been in development since 2018, but it seems particularly topical now given its pandemic-focused storyline. The nature of the film itself is still a bit convoluted, in that it’s a movie based on a video game series loosely connected to Tom Clancy, whose novels have been adapted into various acclaimed films in the past. Though Netflix’s The Division may not strive for such high heights as classics like The Hunt for Red October, it should still deliver some of the military thriller energy Clancy fans are accustomed to.

The Division is one of many video game movie adaptations currently in development. The genre seems to be finding its footing after decades of ridicule, with upcoming projects like the new Mortal Kombat movie, HBO’s The Last of Us series, and the Tom Holland-led Uncharted movie all set to release in the near future. Those are just some of the video game adaptations currently in development, many of which are finding a home at Netflix. Hopefully, Tom Clancy’s The Division will be one of the good ones.
