Ant-Man 2: Evangeline Lilly’s Wasp Costume Officially Revealed

Evangeline Lilly has officially revealed her new Wasp costume for the Marvel Cinematic Universe sequel, Ant-Man and the Wasp. The reveal serves in part to commemorate the memory of the late comic book icon (and frequent Stan Lee collaborator) Jack Kirby, on what would have been his 100th birthday.
Lilly has teased Hope getting her own Wasp costume for the second Ant-Man film before, following the first Ant-Man‘s mid-credits scene reveal of the shrinking supersuit that Hope’s mother, Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer), wore back when she was The Wasp, prior to her being trapped in the Quantum Realm. With production on Ant-Man and the Wasp – a movie that brings back Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/Ant-Man opposite Lilly as Hope and Michael Douglas as Hope’s father/former Ant-Man, Hank Pym – currently underway at the Marvel Pinewood Studio in Atlanta, Georgia, it was only a matter of time before Lilly went the whole nine yards and gave fans their first look at the actual Wasp costume itself… and now, she has done just that.

Whereas Janet’s Wasp costume draws from a gold/red/blue/silver costume palette, Hope’s supersuit swaps out gold for black and has more silver-colored components, by comparison. The designs are by and large identical otherwise, which makes sense enough – seeing as both Wasp suits ought to be similar in their function, despite the obvious modern technological enhancements that Hope’s costume should come with.

There’s no indication in Lilly’s Twitter post as to where and when in Ant-Man and the Wasp the scene photographed here is set. However, based on the fact that it takes place in what is clearly a children’s classroom (see also the “ants” easter egg on the chalkboard in the background), it’s quite plausible that this sequence is set at the elementary school where Scott’s young daughter, Cassandra aka. Cassie (Abby Ryder Fortson), goes.

As to why Hope is hanging around a kid’s school, well, that’s one of many mysteries currently surrounding the plot of the Ant-Man sequel. The official Ant-Man and the Wasp synopsis confirms that the movie picks up after the events of Captain America: Civil War, but avoids revealing where in the MCU timeline the film takes place with respect to Avengers: Infinity War (which hits theaters a couple months before Ant-Man and the Wasp next year). Lilly has confirmed that Hope will appear in Avengers 4 but not Infinity War, meaning Ant-Man and the Wasp will serve as the first time that audiences get to see her properly suit-up. The film may also serve to explain where Hope is during the events of Infinity War, thus setting up her appearance in the fourth and final installment of Phase 3 in the MCU, at the same time.
