The Marvel Cinematic Universe is on top of the world right now, after a stellar opening weekend for its latest film, Thor: Ragnarok. Buffeted by very positive reviews and a 93 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, the third Thor movie made an estimated $121 million in its first weekend domestically on 4,080 screens. This haul places it as the seventh largest opening ever for a film in the MCU, only after The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, Iron Man 3, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Iron Man 2.

More importantly, Thor: Ragnarok joins Spider-Man: Homecoming and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 as the third MCU film to gross over $100 million in its opening weekend in 2017 and the eighth overall. This is the first time in box office history that a production studio has released three films that opened this high all in one year. It also means that the film’s distributor, Disney, will break another record this year with five $100 million-plus openings in 2017, including Beauty and the Beast and December’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which is projected to open to more than $200 million.

Internationally, in its second weekend Ragnarok is now playing across almost the entire worldwide marketplace after opening in Germany, Russia, Mexico, China and Japan with an additional $151.4 million for an overseas gross of $306 million since first opening last weekend. The estimated $55.6 million opening in China is the largest ever for a November release as is the movie’s $5.2 million debut in India. Overall, this pushes the film’s global total to $427 million, and it is currently tracking to do better than Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Marvel Studios is also cashing in on the good tidings as the MCU has now officially crossed the $5 billion mark domestically thanks to Thor: Ragnarok‘s strong opening. This puts the franchise, which also passed $10 billion worldwide just last year, ahead of Star Wars, Harry Potter, Batman and James Bond domestically. Marvel superheroes are popular all across the globe.

Thor: Ragnarok has enjoyed great word-of-mouth since its debut, and the film looks like it’s going to have long legs at the box office, especially overseas where the movie seems to be perfectly crafted for that market. Reviews have cited that Ragnarok is an exciting, fun, colorful cosmic adventure that falls right into what international audiences are wanting right now. It’s translatable across generations and cultures, while taking audiences’ minds off everyday life. Next up for the franchise is February’s Black Panther, May’s Avengers: Infinity War and July’s Ant-Man and the Wasp.
