The CW announced a fall premiere date for The Winchesters. A year after CW's flagship dark fantasy TV series, Supernatural, ended its wildly successful 15-season run, the announcement came that a spin-off prequel show called The Winchesters was already in development. Executive produced by Supernatural's Jensen Ackles (who is also the narrator) and his wife Danneel, with creative contribution from the mothership series writer Robbie Thompson, The Winchesters centers on John and Mary, parents of the original heroes, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Ackles). In the new show, Meg Donnelly and Drake Rodger are playing the lead pair, with Nida Khurshid, Jonathan Fleites, Demetria McKinney, and Bianca Kajlich in key roles.

The CW had ordered a pilot for The Winchesters in February 2022. Ackles' involvement in the Supernatural prequel show and the original series' reputation contributed to the buzz around the spin-off. Still, it was uncertain if The Winchesters would eventually see the light of the day, considering that The CW was downsizing amid an ownership change and business strategy shift. The Winchesters, nevertheless, managed to stand out enough that in May 2022, it scored a series order, along with Walker: Independence and Gotham Knights.

As confirmed by Deadline, The CW has set The Winchesters for its fall 2022 slate, scheduling it for a release on Tuesday, October 11, 2022. The show will air new episodes on the same day every week, although the exact episode count is yet to be determined. The news comes as the network announced the fall premiere dates for its upcoming season, including both returning and original series.

The wait for The Winchesters' debut is arguably longer than expected, as the other networks mostly have new shows premiering in September. Thankfully, The CW has already set a trailer for The Winchesters to tide fans over, giving a clear idea about the story of the Supernatural prequel show. As indicated previously, The Winchesters will explore John and Mary's life from their first meeting when the latter saves the Vietnam war veteran from falling prey to a demon. Mary is searching for her father when she meets John, and upon their encounter, the two realize that they can work together, so they set forth on a supernatural monster-hunting adventure.

It is heartwarming to see that The Winchesters is on the right track and is all set for a launch later this year. Undoubtedly, the show has run into its share of problems. Immediately after it was announced, it hit a snag when Padalecki called out Ackles for keeping him out of the loop about the spin-off's development. Thankfully, the original stars were quick to resolve their issues and satisfy a conflicted fanbase. All those troubles have been left behind, and The Winchesters continues to prosper and progress. The show has a different feel than Supernatural, which is nice as it mixes charming nostalgia with a new story. This will allow The Winchesters to appeal to new and returning viewers and establish itself as a thing of its own. Of course, there is still the need to see how the show addresses its continuity issues with Supernatural, but that likely won't become clear until the October premiere.
