Supernatural producer has offered some new intel regarding Castiel’s (Missha Collins) fate moving forward. The long running The CW series is gearing for its season 13 comeback in the fall and fans are already on the lookout as to where we will find our heroes (and villain/s) after that somewhat bittersweet season 12 finale.

The show’s last outing proved to be hectic and stressful for the Winchesters and their allies as even after they were able to get through the attack courtesy to the Brits, they were still hounded by the Lucifer (Rick Springfield). Although at the end, they were able to contain the fallen archangel in the separate dimension, it came with a couple of repercussions like losing their mom, Mary (Samantha Smith), who the villain dragged with him through the portal and Castiel biting the bullet through the whole ordeal. While death is not necessarily the worst thing to happen in a fantastical series like Supernatural, the show exec warns the fans, it would still be a trying time for the good guys while their old pal is supposedly gone.

Speaking to TV Line as part of the outlet’s fall TV season preview, executive producer Andrew Dabb has revealed that Castiel’s so-called death will definitely not be the end of him but it would take a bit of time before he gets back into the thick of things prior to his supposed demise. The silver lining in this, however, will be the promise that when he finally returns, he would be a key personality in whatever situation the Winchesters find themselves by that time:

“That being said, when we pick up our season he’s more dead than people usually get on our show. Castiel has a big role to play for us, but that may not be as soon as some people are hoping.”

Further, Dabb has also glossed over how Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam (Jared Padalecki) are coping with their losses in time being. “There’s no one they can call, so our guys are a bit on their own, a little spun out, both emotionally and in terms of the plot.” On top of that, they are also “acting as parents” to Lucifer’s “walking atomic bomb” child, Jack. “There are parts of him and things he does that they really love, and there are parts of him and things he does that worry them a bit.” Meanwhile, in the alternate universe where the apocalypse is being ensued, Mary’s attempt to get away from Lucifer is not exactly going as well as she has hoped for. All of this is happening at the same time as the fallen archangel realizes that there is a possibility that he “may not be the most powerful” being that is currently existing. Obviously, this puts a chip on his shoulder and it could either make him more determined in his goals or irrational that could make him vulnerable.

Following the roller coasted guide in season 12, Supernatural is looking to bring the show back to basics by tackling a smaller-scale story in its 13th outing. Just like Lucifer, the upcoming show iteration is bringing back a familiar face as the show’s main big bad, which best suit their endeavors to ground the series’ upcoming story. Unfortunately, other than that, folks behind the show are rather tight-lipped on the identity of the new antagonist.
