The debut of Supergirl’s first season on CBS was met with mixed reactions from viewers. Complaints ranged from it being overly cheesy to it watering down the material from the comic books. Many even wondered why Supergirl was on CBS in the first place instead of The CW. Before leaving as the President of CBS Entertainment and being replaced by Glenn Geller, Nina Tassler had said that the network was interested in keeping Supergirl for themselves in response to calls for a crossover with the other shows. But there was still hope on the part of the executive producers over at The CW for Supergirl to crossover with the Arrowverse, especially considering CBS co-owns The CW with Warner Bros. Television. Then Glenn Geller took over as President of CBS Entertainment and things changed.

The Flash season 2 introduced the concept of the multiverse and parallel earths, which became the explanation as to why Superman or Supergirl had never been mentioned up until that point in the Arrowverse. Ultimately it was officially announced that there would be a crossover episode featuring The Flash and the Girl of Steel. Her existence in the Arrowverse would be canon, despite being on a different network. The episode had a great response and fans praised the chemistry between Melissa Benoist’s character and Grant Gustin’s. Then, in May it was confirmed that Supergirl would be joining The CW for its second season.

Now an image has been posted to Instagram by actress Caity Lotz, who plays White Canary on Legends of Tomorrow, featuring her and Benoist in full costume, arms around one another, smiling. The caption on the photo reads: “Seriously Super.” Take a look:

The photo was taken on the set of the highly anticipated four-night crossover event that will involve all four superhero shows, which is currently filming. The crossover is said to involve an alien invasion requiring all the heroes to team up. How exactly Supergirl will fit into the story, given she is on a different earth, remains to be seen. But it will be great for there to be another female hero added to the main DC Comics TV team.

Not many female heroes remain on The CW shows at the moment. With Black Canary dead, Speedy leaving Team Arrow (although Thea Queen remains a part of the show), and Hawkgirl having left Legends of Tomorrow, the mostly male group of superheroes could use more women. Of course, in addition to Supergirl joining the Arrowverse, both Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow will be adding new female heroes in their upcoming seasons, including new archer Artemis (Madison McLaughlin) and JSA member Stargirl (Sarah Grey).

That said, it will be interesting to see the dynamic between White Canary, a cold-blooded assassin, and Supergirl, who is an extremely light-hearted character of alien origin. The dichotomy should prove entertaining.

The Flash season 3 will premiere Tuesday October 4th at 8pm on The CW, Arrow season 5 will premiere in the same timeslot on Wednesday October 5th, Supergirl season 2 on Monday October 10th, and Legends of Tomorrow season 2 on Thursday October 13th.
