Superman and Lois is getting fast-tracked as The CW has handed out the Arrowverse series an early series pick-up. The network made it clear with Crisis on Infinite Earths, the ongoing crossover event, that the DC TV status quo would be changing quite a lot through the five-hour event. With Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch's portrayals of the Man of Steel and Lois Lane being well-received after their screen time together in Elseworlds, it was only a matter of time before a spin-off was considered. Prior to the crossover airing, The CW had put Superman and Lois into development from Greg Berlanti, the executive producer of all the Arrowverse series.
The series will follow Clark Kent and Lois Lane dealing with their busy adventurous lives while also tackling a new chapter: parenthood. Former The Flash showrunner Todd Helbing was attached to write and headline the series along with Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Geoff Johns executive producing. With the couple revealing that they were expecting their first child together in the 2018 crossover, viewers got to officially meet Jonathan 'Jon' Kent in the first three parts of Crisis on Infinite Earths. Casting has reportedly already begun as they're looking for talent for two teenage boys who will be part of the main cast. With things already in motion and Crisis on Infinite Earths set to end tonight, The CW has fully committed to the last son of Krypton.
The CW has officially ordered Superman and Lois to series for the 2020-2021 TV season. Despite it being early in the pilot season, the network is officially adding the series to their slate of programming for next season. Jared Padalecki's Walker, Texas Ranger reboot also received a series pick-up with the actor's other series Supernatural set to end its long run later this season. This follows a week after The CW renewed 13 shows for next season, including all the ongoing Arrowverse shows.

This was, however, one of two DC shows that The CW has been working on, with other being an Arrow spin-off, Green Arrow and the Canaries. While the backdoor pilot will air on January 21, it's the only DC show to not get a series pick-up, initially. Deadline revealed that while Green Arrow and the Canaries' fate is yet to be determined, The CW may only go with one DC series for the coming season. But the final call won't be made until they have looked over all their pilots that are in the works. With Hoechlin and Tulloch's spin-off officially a go, this marks the third Superman-related series in The CW's history.
The first was Smallville that came over from The WB after its merge with UPN, with Tom Welling starring in the iconic DC role for 10 seasons. The second was Melissa Benoist's Supergirl that began on CBS, but was saved by The CW for its second season. A series pick-up ahead of the final two hours of Crisis on Infinite Earths could suggest that the crossover will do some groundwork for the new series. More details about Superman and Lois are expected later in the spring and during The CW upfronts.
