Warner Bros. and DC’s Batman v Superman has seen a lot of attention of late, but the DCMU’s other 2016 release – the supervillain team-up/showdown Suicide Squad - has has held fans’ fascination with several of the villains and anti-heroes set to be introduced, including Deadshot (Will Smith), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), Rick Flagg (Joel Kinnaman), Enchantress (Cara Delevingne) and – in some capacity – Jared Leto’s Joker.

The recent confirmation of Margot Robbie’s multi-picture contract and Will Smith’s enthusiasm about his version of Deadshot indicates that Suicide Squad will likely center on their characters, but for longtime fans of all things Batman, a new incarnation of the Dark Knight’s iconic arch-foe is major draw – even if we still don’t know much about Leto’s Joker.

Jared Leto has referred to the comic book version of the villain as a “beautiful disaster,” and the actor’s ongoing physical transformation has led to some speculation that this Joker might be noticeably more muscular, perhaps taking design cues from Frank Miller’s “All-Star Batman and Robin” title.

Still, the Joker has proven to be one of the greatest comic book characters of all time, and this new incarnation will share the same narrative universe as Ben Affleck’s Batman and Henry Cavill’s Superman. With that in mind, how would Suicide Squad writer-director David Ayer define Leto’s take on the villain? When asked, Ayer tweeted the following (by way of CBM):

Is Ayer teasing here or does the term “majestic” truly apply to Leto’s Joker? It may not be that much of a stretch – after all, he is known as the Clown Prince of Crime. Ayer also shared more images and insights from his ongoing chronicle of Suicide Squad‘s pre-production:

These images may be spoiler-free, but the set under construction gives us a sense of Suicide Squad‘s scale as glimpsed from Ayer’s prior tweets showcasing some of the shot planning. Hardcore fans can now open the debate about which set this construction is for: Arkham Asylum? Belle Reve Prison? Somewhere else? There’s no way to know, but Ayer’s clear enthusiasm for the project guarantees our attention.

While the term ‘majestic’ may not be the first thing that comes to mind when discussing the Joker, if some of the previous rumors surrounding the plot of Suicide Squad are accurate, than the term may hit fairly close to home. The Joker will supposedly spend much of the film’s running time incarcerated, with his confinement ensuring Harley Quinn’s obedience as part of Amanda Waller’s ‘Task Force X.’ If this is true, then the Hannibal Lecter-like influence of Leto’s Joker over the rest of the story could indeed live up to Ayer’s adjective.

Plus, this new DC cinematic universe will acquaint us with a Batman who has already been active for a number of years, meaning that this Joker will already have been established as Batman’s nemesis. The Joker has long cast his own terrifying shadow over Gotham City’s criminal underbelly, so the character’s own dark majesty might be just the right element to set up the rumored Batman solo film that might be teased at the end of Suicide Squad.

Suicide Squad will be released on August 5, 2016.
