When the new season of Stranger Things kicks off, the action will take place in an entirely different locale. After Stranger Things took the Internet by storm with its debut last year, it seemed all but guaranteed to receive a follow-up. Sure enough, another season was soon announced, which will arrive just in time for Halloween. What’s less known, however, is whether the idiosyncratic first season can be matched or improved upon.

With the premiere of what’s being dubbed Stranger Things 2 right around the corner, EW kicked off their three-part cover story on the show today. Along with the trio of covers showcasing the new and returning cast, the magazine has been slowly doling out new interviews and information regarding this season. Not only will the new season be bigger, but it will revolve around the shadow monster that’s been glimpsed in various promotional items. Now, it looks as if the threat will be more far-reaching than last season.

EW spoke with Stranger Things creators The Duffer Brothers about the new season and how everything will come together. And while they wouldn’t reveal exactly where the action begins this season, Matt Duffer did tease it wouldn’t be Hawkins, Indiana.

“I liked opening the show in a place not in Hawkins, in an urban environment. I want people thinking maybe they’ve clicked on the show and then, boom, you realize ‘Oh now we’re still in it.’ But it’s all about broadening, and expanding our world.”

While that desire to disorient the audience is par for the course when it comes to Stranger Things, the new location also seems to hint that the threat this season will kick off outside of Hawkins. It’s seemed obvious that the scope of the show would expand as it gained more seasons, but now it looks as if more than just Hawkins will be affected. The spreading terror could even be what establishes this season’s big cliffhanger.

Along with multiple locales, the plots in the new season will also be more sprawling. With more characters and presumably bigger threats, a number of different stories will play out. But Ross Duffer assures fans that the disparate elements will all come together in the end.

“We have all these different threads and you don’t see how possibly all these things could come together and then slowly but surely they all play an integral role in the story this season.

As we await the release of Stranger Things 2, the show has continued to release posters for the series. The most recent one teased Will’s role now that he’s back from the Upside Down. The series has also continued its homage to ’80s films, most recently with a Goonies-inspired poster. And with Halloween just around the corner expect plenty of more reveals to arrive.
