There's no question that the Academy Awards ceremony is the biggest night of the year in the film industry. It's the Super Bowl of movies. Every year is different, and the responsibility often falls upon the host to set the tone of the affair. This year the hosting duties will fall upon late night host Jimmy Kimmel, and it seems that he is making a relatively small sum for such a big night.

During a recent radio show appearance (via Yahoo Movies) Jimmy Kimmel talked about his upcoming stint as the host of the Academy Awards and admitted that he's making $15,000 for the evening. Although most of us would probably kill to make that much for a single evening of work, that's apparently on the lower side compared to Kimmel's usual pay. It's also relatively low for any Oscar host, as the average pay to headline the Academy Awards typically yields somewhere between $15,000 and $25,000, thus putting Kimmel on the lower end of the spectrum. The reveal follows a recent episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! in which Kimmel dove into a somewhat self-deprecating rant about how he was probably the last choice for the job, as his announcement was made later than usual and without all of the typical fanfare. The guy clearly isn't above poking fun at himself.

That being said, Jimmy Kimmel has definitely proven himself to be a capable and competent host when it comes to award shows. He recently took on the hosting duties for the Emmys, and he managed to deliver the laughs and bring the ceremony home without wasting much time. Considering the fact that most awards shows have a tendency to go into overtime these days, that's actually an impressive accomplishment. Let's see if he can do it again with the Oscars.

Hosting the Oscars has become an honor among celebrities over the years, and each host has brought something special to the job. As a job that has been performed regularly by comedians, the Academy Awards ceremony has seen modern icons like Billy Crystal, Chris Rock and Whoopi Goldberg host a number of times. However, nobody has ever come close to matching Bob Hope's record, as the gold club wielding stand-up hosted the ceremony a record 18 times before his death.

Of course, at 49 years old, Jimmy Kimmel is definitely still young enough to give Bob Hope a run for his money. If Kimmel does well, we can probably expect to see plenty more of him in the near future. Who knows? Maybe they will even give him a raise from that $15,000 paycheck he's earning for his first time around.
