Adam Driver may have just dropped a major Star Wars: The Last Jedi spoiler that pretty much confirms Rey’s parentage – if you view his latest interview from a certain point of view. When The Force Awakens hit, the biggest question on everybody’s lips was “who are Rey’s parents?” Potential solutions came thick and fast: depending on who you asked, she was a Skywalker, a Solo, a Kenobi, a Palpatine, an Erso, a Wren or even a Fisto. As time’s gone on, however, the mystery’s got less interesting, with it becoming clear her past isn’t what’s important, but where she’s going.

Indeed, it seems her key impact on the Skywalker brood may be the influence she has on Kylo Ren. Ben Solo was one the most intriguing characters in The Force Awakens – a Darth Vader fanboy struggling to live up to his Grandfather – and things are only looking to get more complicated in The Last Jedi; the latest trailer alluded to him wrestling with turning his back fully on his family and the Light, and further heavily suggested Rey was going to be at the center of it.

Adam Driver recently discussed his arc in Episode VIII with GQ, shedding some light on the upcoming film’s dissection of his character. However, he went on to discuss his relation to Rey and in doing so may have dropped a massive spoiler. Check out the quote below:

“I remember the initial conversations about having things ‘skinned’, peeling away layers to evolve into other people, and the person Kylo’s pretending to be on the outside is not who he is. He’s a vulnerable kid who doesn’t know where to put his energy, but when he puts his mask on, suddenly, he’s playing a role. JJ had that idea initially and I think Rian took it to the next level.”

“You have, also, the hidden identity of this princess who’s hiding who she really is so she can survive and Kylo Ren and her hiding behind these artifices.”

Yes, you read that right – Driver calls Rey a princess. Because this is Star Wars and Star Wars is all about family, any fan’s mind immediately goes to one place: Driver is saying that Rey is (former) Princess Leia’s daughter, and by extension Ben’s sister. The ramifications of this are well-covered thanks to the past two years of speculation, but it’s obviously never been properly confirmed.

However, is this actually what he’s saying? Before getting into the semantics of the quote itself, consider where it came from. This is a GQ interview for the film itself, so will have been executed under PR watch with all quotes vetted prior to publication. Even though the article itself does speculate about it being a spoiler, would Lucasfilm’s notoriously tight security really let that out? Besides, it’s not like Driver spells out a reveal anyway; at best he alludes that Rey is royalty, which could mean any number of things beyond being the daughter of a woman who hasn’t been called princess in-universe since her planet was destroyed 35 years ago. Indeed, to say the words “hidden identity” only to immediately give the biggest clue we have to said identity feels off.

Instead, considering that the entire quote is about the idea of Ren’s arc, it’s more likely he’s speaking in broad terms, likening Rey to an archetypal heroine – which we know she is. After all, the real point of the comparison is to draw attention how, despite being on opposite ends of the Force spectrum, the pair are very similar: Kylo Ren doesn’t know who he is, just like the scavenger-turned-warrior Rey. Given the current marketing push around these two, to describe her in this manner makes sense.

So, did Driver spoil Rey’s parentage? Possibly, but it requires making an awful lot of logic leaps and ignoring a simpler answer so we’re inclined to false flag it. Even if Rey is Ben’s sister, that doesn’t mean it’s what he’s saying here.
