The cast of CBS All Access’s upcoming Picard Star Trek series grows with Alison Pill, Harry Treadaway, and Isa Briones joining Patrick Stewart in the ongoing adventures of the beloved Jean-Luc Picard. The series was announced late in 2018, as the Eye Network’s streaming service continues to build its library of original content by sticking to its genre guns. That being, of course, another series in the long-running space franchise, as well as Jordan Peele’s reboot of The Twilight Zone, and the upcoming adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand.

The Picard series certainly has the potential to appeal to long-time Trek fans, as instead of being prone to retcons like the prequel series Star Trek: Discovery, it picks up with the Starfleet captain long after his voyage aboard the Enterprise in Star Trek: The Next Generation has concluded. Yet the series promises fans the chance to be reunited with an immensely popular character, presumably without the threat of undoing or altering already existing storylines and character arcs. What it may do, however, is introduce audiences to a Picard who has changed in the years since viewers have seen him last. One need only look as far as The Last Jedi to see how open some fans are to such changes.

Nevertheless, the as-yet-untitled series is moving forward as casting announcements were reported by Deadline, bringing Pill (Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, The Newsroom), Treadaway (Penny Dreadful, The Crown), and Briones (Hamilton, American Crime Story: Versace) into the far-flung future with the former captain. As is so often the case with series like this, there were no details available about the characters the actors would be playing, so it’s time to spark up the internet speculation machine to try and figure out if anyone will have a connection to pre-existing Star Trek lore.

While any guess is as good as the next at this point, it’s worth noting that both Pill and Treadaway come with some genre bona fides, and may help the series secure an audience once details about who they’re playing are released. With Pill having been in Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World and American Horror Story: Cult, she’s no stranger to outlandish stories or those involving creative visuals. The same goes for Treadaway, who spent three seasons playing Dr. Victor Frankenstein on Showtime’s Penny Dreadful and more recently starred opposite Brendan Gleeson in Audience Network’s Stephen King adaptation, Mr. Mercedes. Briones, however, is the unknown quantity as far as the new cast members are concerned. Her participation in the touring company of Hamilton may bring some recognition, but this role may be her highest profile yet.

So far, the details on the new series seem to have slowed to a trickle, but that will likely only help build anticipation for whatever it is that CBS All Access has cooked up regarding the return of Picard and the extension of the Star Trek franchise on television. With any luck, more details will be available soon.
