The cast of Star Trek: Discovery will be a little different in season 2, as Anson Mount takes a role as Christopher Pike, and the actor reveals what kind of captain he’ll be. Discovery will have undergone a number of changes before audiences see a single episode of the new season, as not only has Mount joined the show along with Ethan Peck as a young Spock, but there’s been some behind-the-scenes rejiggering as well, as Alex Kurtzman steps in as the series’ new showrunner, following a divisive first season of the Star Trek prequel series.

Though Pike and Spock will be aboard the Discovery, the show is still very much centered on Sonequa Martin-Green’s Michale Burnham. She’ll have her hands full this season helping the new captain find his footing with the rest of the ship’s crew and dealing with whatever familial issues may still be lingering between her and her adoptive brother. Added to that is the promise that the show will put an emphasis on classic Star Trek storytelling, with the added benefit of some impressive visual effects that will help amp up the sense of adventure Kurtzman and the show are pinning their hopes on in season 2.

In addition to all that, Discovery will have the chance to fill in some of the gaps in Pike’s personal history, something Mount seems eager to explore in the newest featurette promoting the upcoming new season. Check out the video below:

It won’t be an easy transition, from the look of things, but from what Trek fans already know about Pike and where he’s headed, the new (if temporary) captain of the Discovery might be one of the most important additions to the series.

Star Trek: Discovery season 2 premieres Thursday, January 17 on CBS All Access.
