An English-language TV series adaptation of writer’s Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher saga is currently under development on Netflix.

As revealed via Platige’s press release, the 8-novel series (which has a cult following among fans of the fantasy genre) is getting absorbed into a drama show produced by the popular streaming service. The story of the books revolves around the adventures of Geralt of Rivia and his quest as a witcher. Witchers are deemed as monster hunters, who at a very young age are already being trained to develop supernatural abilities.

This is not the first time that The Witcher saga has been adapted into a TV series. In fact, back in 2002, a show dubbed as The Hexer was released in Poland. Prior to that, a film iteration with the same title and source material was also released. Both projects were helmed by Polish director Marek Brodzki, with actor Michal Zebrowski taking on the role of Geralt in both productions. Unfortunately, the projects were poorly received, with Sapkowski even blatant about his criticism of the screen adaptations.

his time, however, it appears that the Polish author is more than excited with his property’s upcoming TV treatment, especially with him being tapped to serve as a creative consultant for the series. “I’m thrilled that Netflix will be doing an adaptation of my stories, staying true to the source material and the themes that I have spent over thirty years writing,” he exclaimed in a press statement regarding the upcoming project.“I’m excited about our efforts together as well as the team assembled to shepherd these characters to life.”

Sean Daniel Company bosses Sean Daniel and Jason Brown, together with Tomek Baginski and Jarek Sawko from Polish production and VFX house Platige Image, will be co-executive producers of the series. Daniel and Brown have both expressed their excitement over the project saying: “The Witcher stories follow an unconventional family that comes together to fight for truth in a dangerous world. The characters are original, funny and constantly surprising and we can’t wait to bring them to life at Netflix.”

Aside from big and small screen adaptations of The Witcher, it has also been used as the narrative for the video game franchise of the same name. The trilogy consists of 2007’s The Witcher, 2009’s The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings and 2015’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Baginski, who directed the prelude videos for all of the video games, is expected to direct at least one episode per season of the new Netflix show.
