Friday at San Diego Comic-Con, Star Trek: Discovery released a season 2 trailer and also announced its premiere date for early 2019. Season 1 of the CBS All Access show marked the return of Star Trek to the small for the first time since Star Trek: Enterprise left in 2006. Following the adventures of Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), season 1 resurrected several classic Star Trek scenarios including the Mirror Universe while also introducing higher production values and considerably more action than previous Trek series.

Season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery will see the show digging even deeper into classic Trek lore as it brings in the Starship Enterprise and its famous pre-Kirk captain Christopher Pike (to be played by Inhumans star Anson Mount). Season 2 will also see the arrival of Mr. Spock, though no actor has yet been named in the role. The show underwent major behind-the-scenes changes earlier this year when showrunners Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts were replaced midway through production by Alex Kurtzman.

During Friday's San Diego Comic-Con panel for the series, CBS revealed the first trailer for season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery and also announced that the show will return in early 2019. See the trailer above.

The first season 2 trailer picks right up where season 1 left off, with the Discovery encountering the Enterprise and Captain Christopher Pike, who immediately boards the Discovery and takes over. It's quickly revealed that Pike has commandeered the Discovery because of a mysterious threat: seven unknown signals spread out over thousands of light years. Pike and the Discovery crew head out to learn the nature of the signals, and soon find themselves in the middle of rollicking sci-fi action much like what was featured in season 1. Of course, all our favorite characters are back, including Saru (Doug Jones), Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) and the ever-plucky Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman).

Later on, the trailer offers up the tease fans have been waiting for: The first hint that Mr. Spock is on the way. But it seems Spock could be in trouble as it's revealed he's taken leave from the Enterprise and is somehow linked to the mysterious signals. And of course it's his foster sister Michael Burnham's job to save him. Tig Notaro also appears for her debut in the Star Trek universe as the awesomely named Jet Reno. All in all, the trailer promises more of the same action that characterized Star Trek: Discovery season 1 (and bothered certain Trek purists) while teasing a far-ranging mystery plot that will take the crew all over the known galaxy.
