Sony Releases Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse Script Online For Free
Sony has released the script for Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse online. The first animated Spider-Man blockbuster, Into The Spider-Verse has been greeted with delight by fans and critics alike. It debuted to a perfect 100 percent Rotten Tomatoes critic score (and still sits at a stunning 97 percent), but in a December packed with competition it's currently grossed only $156 million worldwide. It's more than recouped its costs, though, and Sony has already signed up to a sequel and a spinoff.
Attention has rightly focused on the ground-breaking animation, with Sony incorporating comic book effects in a manner that's frankly reminiscent of Roy Lichtenstein’s 1960s artwork. The studio was so pleased with the results that they've applied for patent protections, claiming the innovations in animation qualify as a brand new invention. But, in truth, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse isn't just outstanding because of its animation; it also has an excellent script, one that draws heavily upon the original comics.
Sony has taken the unusual step of publishing the entire script online. Co-writer/co-director Rodney Rothman announced it on Twitter, (h/t IndieWire) revealing that "Sony was kind enough to make our Spider-Verse script available online." It's a fascinating read, and it reveals just how much the production team trusted one another; the script leaves a lot of room for the animators to experiment. They were free to reimagine the iconic images, but were given precise direction where the script required it. That's visible from the opening pages, where we read:
"Spiderman [sic] saves the city, kisses MJ, saves the city some more. The shots evoke ICONIC SPIDER-MAN IMAGES, but each one is subtly different, somehow altered... Cut to Spider-Man dancing on the street, exactly like in the movie Spider-Man 3."
The script is filled with details that may have slipped by even the most dedicated viewer, and is well worth a read. For example, it establishes that Spider-Gwen was battling her version of Doctor Octopus in another collider room, suggesting several different versions of Doctor Octopus have been conducting the same experiments on the fabric of reality. That's particularly interesting given Spider-Gwen's version of the Kingpin is usually portrayed as very different to the norm; in the Spider-Gwen universe, the Kingpin of Crime is actually Matt Murdock, Fisk's attorney, who took control of Fisk's criminal empire when he went to jail.
What was Doctor Octopus' motive in Spider-Gwen's reality, and who funded that collider experiment? Whatever the answers to these questions may be, it seems only on Miles' Earth did the collider experiment progress to the stage that it threatened the entire Multiverse. No doubt readers will be especially entertained at the coda scene, which contains an honest assessment of the hilarious Spider-Man meme joke. "And we go out in pure chaos," the script reads, "the most expensive dumb joke of all time..."
Amusingly, even the cast didn't have access to the full script. The actors were only given their own lines, meaning this film's plot was possibly even more secretive than Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War. You can download the full script from the Sony website, and perhaps the stars will be downloading their own copies to have a read, too.
