SNL Sketch Creates Fake Game of Thrones Crossover Shows

NBC’s Saturday Night Live airs a sketch with some suggestions for new Game of Thrones spinoff shows. For the comedy series’ latest episode, Game of Thrones’ Kit Harington served as host and, of course, appears as his iconic TV character, Jon Snow in the sketch.

On the HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones, various families rely on tradition and violence to survive, with the main players forming alliances to ensure long-term control. Over the past seven seasons, Game of Thrones has woven together many different subplots to not only build character arcs, but also to establish context for the Great War - a battle between the living and the dead. Just days before the Game of Thrones season 8 premiere, Harington hosted Saturday Night Live and appeared in numerous Games of Thrones-themed promos for the episode, including one in which cast member Leslie Jones acts out her Westeros fantasies.

During the latest Saturday Night Live season 44 episode, the show aired a sketch about fake Game of Thrones spinoff shows. In the first, Harington portrays Jon Snow in “Castle Black,” a show described as “a sexy, moody drama about forbidden love.” The clips shows Jon Snow being confronted by his love interest, a White Walker who ultimately exposes her skeletal chest and says “come take it.” The sketch also features an Arya Stark-themed crossover in the style of MTV's Daria in which Jon Snow’s half-sister is an “angsty assassin in cartoon form.” Another sketch features the Game of Thrones characters Sam and Gilly in The Queen of Kings Landing, while Saturday Night Live also teases “a game of crossovers” that includes Cersei and the City, No Ballers, and The Marvelous Mrs. Melisandre. The clip continues on with even more fictional crossovers, including one that features Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’s Mariska Hargitay and Ice-T. Watch the full clip below:

Game of Thrones will officially end on May 19, but a prequel series has long been in the works. Entitled The Long Night, the series spinoff will reportedly begin filming this summer, and will explore ancient Game of Thrones history, with Naomi Watts thought to be portraying the first Lannister. In the lead role, The Long Night cast Josh Whitehouse, and veteran actress Miranda Richardson joined the pilot cast last month. Both Watts and Richardson are Oscar-nominated actresses.

Saturday Night Live’s Game of Thrones sketch shows just how popular the characters have become. In addition, the clip teases what could be, as the television franchise influenced pop culture like no other during the past decade. The inclusion of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit is also telling, as that particular series was recently renewed for a record-breaking 21st season. In the future, maybe current Game of Thrones characters will re-emerge on television. For now, though, fans can still enjoy the wholly unique experience of watching new Game of Thrones episodes for at least one more season.
