[This is a review of Sleepy Hollow season 2, episode 7. There will be SPOILERS.]

This week, Sleepy Hollow dropped its monster-of-the-week formula for something more intimate, as Katrina finds herself in the most desperate of situations. The resulting episode, titled ‘Deliverance’, was also a way for a husband and wife to make amends.

So far, this season of Sleepy Hollow still feels like it’s waiting for something. What that is, this reviewer cannot say, but the direction of this sophomore outing remains unclear. With Moloch temporarily stuck in Purgatory, Henry Parish (Horseman of War) is the primary antagonist, but for what purpose? Is he the lost child in the woods that just needs his mom and dad, or will he end up bringing about the apocalypse?

Katrina and Ichabod’s love for their son is admirable, yet there are few signs that Henry will ever be saved. Perhaps we’ll see more of that vision of him running through the forest in future episodes? John Noble continues to give an excellent performance as the bringer of war, always sneering and laughing deeply when appropriate. There may be a tortured soul somewhere inside him, but for now, he’s portraying the classic villain trope admirably. Sadly, as with any show with a large ensemble, some characters (due to budget constraints) won’t be seen for chunks of episodes at a time.

One such character is the formidable Sheriff Leena Reyes, who has now seen with her own eyes some of the strange occurrences going down in this small town. It’s still uncertain whether or not she will believe the supernatural events, but at least she trusts Abbie and Icahbod for now. Veteran actress Shakina Jaffrey (House of Cards) is a formidable presence on screen, but she almost feels out of place in this fantastical world. Surely the writers have something interesting in store for her down the road? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Another one of our forgotten brethren is Captain Irving, who once again is used as a simple mediator for Icahbod and Henry to meet. Sleepy Hollow is still an outstanding series, but its inability to balance its diverse cast is troublesome. There are just too many talented individuals to showcase every week. One has to wonder if some of our heroes are doomed this season, especially with the addition of Nick Hawley. Jenny Mills also deserves more screen time, as she proved herself to be a vital member of the team in last season’s epic finale.

A high point from ‘Deliverance’ would have to be Katrina and Ichabod’s reconciliation. Katrina promises Ichabod that she harbors no more secrets, but with her track record, it’s difficult to believe her. While the two of them are undoubtedly in love, their time together takes away from Abbie and Ichabod’s relationship. Which relationship (platonic or otherwise) are you more interested in seeing?

With Katrina safe for the time being, it appears that Henry already has another monster he’s attempting to summon. Is he being a good solider and acting on Moloch’s behalf, or is our Horseman of War following his own agenda? Keep watching to see what happens next.

Sleepy Hollow continues with ‘Heartless’ next Monday @9pm on Fox. Check out a preview below:
