Sin City Creator Frank Miller Regains Film & TV Rights

Frank Miller has struck a deal with Lantern Capital Partners to secure the rights to Sin City. With The Weinstein Company declaring bankruptcy, it was only a matter of time before someone bought them out and acquired the rights to several movies and TV shows.

Lantern Capital Partners found themselves picking up the pieces of The Weinstein Company for $289 million. This, of course, took place after Harvey Weinstein was charged with multiple sex crimes from several different women, resulting in a new movement in Hollywood that no longer considers charging people with sexual assault and harassment to be taboo. The Weinstein scandal has become such a huge deal that Annapurna Pictures and Plan B Entertainment are making a movie about it. While Lantern Capital Partners acquired almost all of the Weinstein Company's properties, Miller got the rights to Sin City.

THR reports Miller has regained the rights to not just 2005's Sin City movie, but also the rights to create a Sin City television show. While this should be considered a win for Miller, the rights to Sin City: A Dame to Kill For will go to Lantern Capital Partners since the Weinstein Company distributed the film.

Sin City was not only unique because of its visual style but because of the story and cast attached to it. Jessica Alba, Bruce Willis, and Mickey Rourke were some of the actors in the first film who brought Miller's characters to life. While the second film was not as well received as the first, it added more well-known actors such as Eva Green, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Josh Brolin.

The first Sin City brought in a healthy sum of money; however, the same can not be said for the follow-up. A Dame to Kill For may not have been going up against any new releases the weekend it came out, but Guardians of the Galaxy was still making Disney a good chunk of change despite being out for nearly a month. A Dame to Kill For was not only a weekend flop but one of the biggest flops of the summer.

Despite Miller co-directing both films, he will still only be getting the rights to the first and the TV rights to the whole thing. A Sin City TV show was once in the works, but that was a few years before the Weinstein scandal occurred. Not much has been heard about a Sin City show in quite some time, and fans can only hope that Miller will produce more Sin City content now that he has the ability to do so.
