The producer of The Predator says the movie sets up two more sequels. While the original Predator from 1987 is considered a classic of the genre, the subsequent movies aren't held in such high regard. Predator 2 underperformed compared to the original, and despite featuring some great action and expanding the lore of the series – including a famous Alien easter egg – fans though the lack of Arnold Schwarzenegger hurt the final product.

It took another 14 years for the titular hunter to return for Alien Vs Predator, a long in development crossover that proved to be a box-office hit but received lukewarm reviews from both critics and fans. The sequel (Alien Vs Predator: Requiem) is commonly considered the worst entry in both franchises. Finally, 2010’s Predators found a team of mercenaries and assassins dropped on a predator game planet for a new hunt. The movie featured a great cast and solid action but ultimately felt like a loose remake of the first movie.

Now director Shane Black (The Nice Guys) is seeking to reinvigorate the series for a new generation with The Predator, and in a new interview with Variety, producer John Davis has stated the movie sets up two potential sequels. ‘I would love to say we’ve been planning a trilogy, but I take one day at a time,' says Davis. ‘In motion-picture terms that’s one movie at a time.’ The producer also wants Shane Black to return for both sequels.

Of course, time will tell if audiences embrace The Predator enough to warrant further entries. The movie has had something of a rough time; word of mouth on Black’s script was mixed due to new elements it introduced to the mythology (including hybrid creatures) and the movie recently underwent three weeks of reshoots to film a completely new climax. Black has also admitted making the movie was harder than he expected, so he may not feel like carrying on with the franchise if it continues.

That said, now that more footage and pictures are coming out for The Predator, fans seem to be embracing the project a little more. Black has a long history writing and directing action movies like Lethal Weapon, The Last Boy Scout and Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang, so if anyone is going to bring something fresh to the series, it’s going to be him.
