Seventh Son is the upcoming fantasy adventure tentpole from Legendary Pictures (Godzilla, Dracula Untold), though once upon a time the film was supposed to have been released theatrically by 2013. The project is a loose adaptation of Joseph Delaney’s Wardstone Chronicles novel “The Spook’s Apprentice”, and is headlined by Ben Barnes (Prince Caspian in the Chronicles of Narnia movies) as Tom Ward, the seventh son of a seventh son, destined to battle the forces of darkness

Jeff Bridges costars as Ward’s mentor, Master Gregory, who’s come off as a cross between Gandalf the Grey and Rooster Cogburn in the Seventh Son trailers released up to now, even while Julianne Moore hams it up as the film’s primary antagonist – a witch powered by the forces of darkness. That remains true with the movie’s newly-arrived international trailer, as can be watched at the top of this article.

Directed by Sergey Bodrov (Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan), Seventh Son look to be as visually resplendent and massive in scale as the previous non-Hollywood historical epics that Bodrov has produced over the course of his forty-year filmmaking career (see also, Nomad: The Warrior). The concern is that by stepping into the world of studio tentpoles and CGI-heavy spectacle, Bodrov’s guiding hand as director might be a little shakier, when it comes to using onscreen action and set pieces to advance the story with his latest epic.

The other concern is that the Seventh Son screenplay – penned by Steven Knight (Locke) and Charles Leavitt (Blood Diamond) from a screen story written by Matt Greenberg (Reign of Darkness) – seems to offer a pretty run of the mill hero’s journey narrative; or, at least, that’s the picture the film’s trailers have painted so far. It could well be that the actual movie throws more twists and turns into the mix, and thus Seventh Son will build something more interesting on top of its familiar “Chosen One Fulfills Their Destiny” premise.

In truth, it’s hard to say no to a proper swords and sorcery epic (for us, anyway), even given the concerns, some of which stem from Seventh Son having had its release date pushed back significantly, even before it got delayed again while being passed from Warner Bros. to Universal (after WB and Legendary parted ways). So far, even the weaker genre movies released under the Legendary banner have had their redeeming qualities (see: As Above, So Below), so at the very least Seventh Son should too.

Rounding out the Seventh Son cast are Alicia Vikander (Anna Karenina), Djimon Hounsou (Guardians of the Galaxy), Kit Harington (Game of Thrones), Olivia Williams (Hanna), and Antje Traue (Man of Steel).

Seventh Son opens in U.S. theaters on February 6th, 2015.
