The story is set just before the events of 1977's original movie and will reveal just how Princess Leia came to be in possession of the Death Star plans that allowed Luke Skywalker to swoop in and destroy the battle station.

For months, Lucasfilm has prepped fans for this shift in the time-space continuum, which rewinds the story to retroactively set the chessboard for the original trilogy while introducing a full cast of new characters: Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) whose scientist father was taken away by the Empire to help construct their super weapon.

Among the revelations -- Erso comes to join the Rebels after a jailbreak frees her from the clutches of the Empire, Forest Whitaker's insurgent Saw Gerrera is part machine, with a cybernetic leg, and we get a hint of an Imperial officer with his back to the camera who, to me at least, suggests the profile of the late Peter Cushing's Grand Moff Tarkin.
