‘Saw’ Writers to Spread ‘Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark’
The ’80s were a great time for scaring the crap out of kids. From creepy toys like Mad Balls to brain-shaped candy to even movies like Gremlins, the decade had no problem giving kids nightmares on a regular basis. One big source of sleepless nights for a generation was Alvin Schwartz’s three-book series Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.
Hollywood seems to have finally realized how much excellent source material has been sitting around for decades and moved forward with a Scary Stories movie. Deadline reports that Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, the writers of Saw IV through The Final Chapter and Feast, have set up an adaptation at CBS Films.
Instead of going the anthology route, which seems like a natural choice for Schwartz’s collections of tales, Dunstan and Melton created a script that takes some of the short stories and uses them to frighten some kids whose town is being terrorized by living nightmares.
