Ryan Reynolds is reportedly set to star in a new film about the infamous Bermuda Triangle, which will apparently see the Deadpool 2 actor share the screen with sharks, Vikings, and Nazis. The sci-fi adventure movie is a project that was linked to Sam Raimi over a year ago, but according to sources the director is now moving forward with the production, which is said to begin shooting later this year.

The development of the as-yet-untitled film was first announced in February 2017, with Raimi reported to be in talks with Skydance Productions about directing the movie. There was no official announcement regarding progress at the time, and many assumed that the film was halted in development. Raimi has since been busy in the past year as a producer, working on the likes of Ash vs. Evil Dead, the reboot of The Grudge, and the upcoming Crawl. His last full-length theatrical release as director was Oz the Great and Powerful in 2013. More recently however, he was announced as the director of the first entry in a new series of movies based on The Kingkiller Chronicle.

But according to That Hashtag Show, the Bermuda Triangle film has risen from the depths again, and Raimi is set to start shooting the production as early as this September. Although most character details are being kept secret, Reynolds has apparently been chosen for the lead male role - a theoretical physicist no less - with casting ongoing for the female lead who will be a naval commander called Vogel. The report also supplies a synopsis, which sounds like an updated version of those Doug McClure monster movies from the Seventies, such as The Land That Time Forgot. The plot details are as follows:

When a massive submarine carrying nuclear weapons goes missing in the Bermuda Triangle, Commander Vogel enlists the help of Dr. Fisk (Likely Reynolds) a theoretical physicist, who while using his grandfather’s research opens a wormhole to reveal a mysterious island that is inhabited by anything lost in the triangle including Sharks, Vikings, and Nazis, in the hopes of finding the nuclear weapons.

The script comes from John Gatins, who also penned the recent Power Rangers reboot and the story for Kong: Skull Island. With Raimi set to assume the director's chair, Annihilation producers Don Granger, David Ellison, and Dan Goldberg are also onboard, and filming is expected to be completed in October with a quick turnaround. All of this awaits an official announcement from the studio and the crew involved of course, with Reynolds' involvement especially interesting given his current busy schedule with the likes of Six Underground and the further escapades of Deadpool and X-Force.

Still, if the above report is accurate, Bermuda Triangle could be a wild and fun ride with Raimi at the helm. It would be interesting to see the one-time Spider-Man trilogy director let loose with such potentially crazy material, and maybe utilize some of his horror talents in realizing the more frightening aspects of this alternate dimension. At any rate it would certainly allow him to use some unorthodox humor, and the idea of him working with Reynolds on this story is certainly intriguing at the very least. Hopefully, there will be some further confirmation or news about this possible trip to the Bermuda Triangle very shortly.
