When one thinks of the biggest stars occupying the current comedy landscape, one of the first names to come to mind has to be Kevin Hart. Both an incredibly popular stand-up comic and a comedic actor whose movies regularly do big business at the box office, Hart is clearly enjoying what might be the all-time peak of his fame. Not far below him on the successful comedic actor chart is Ice Cube, who of course first rose to fame as a rapper before crossing over to the world of movies and TV.

The duo’s paths first crossed on-screen in 2014’s Ride Along, a buddy comedy directed by Tim Story and written by Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi. As with many hit comedies, Ride Along’s premise is simple. Hart plays Ben Barber, a security guard at a high school. Ben wants to marry his girlfriend Angela Payton (Tika Sumpter), but before he can do so, he has to prove to her over-protective brother James (Cube) that he’s worthy of her. The catch being that James is a hard-nosed cop, who takes Ben on a ride along to test his mettle, inadvertently getting his sister’s suitor in hot water with a drug lord.

While mostly disliked by critics, Ride Along cleaned up at the box office, bringing in $154 million worldwide on a modest $25 million budget. This unsurprisingly led to 2016 sequel Ride Along 2, which was again trashed by critics, but performed almost as well financially, hauling in $125 million worldwide on a slightly higher budget of $40 million. With that in mind, it’s no surprise that in a recent interview with The Wrap, director Story revealed that Hay and Manfredi are already hard at work on the script for Ride Along 3. Naturally, stars Hart and Cube are both expected to come back as well.

“We’re writing the script right now, we’re writing away and basically, I’m waiting to see some pages and we’re excited for the idea and what it can be and of course bringing Kevin [Hart] and Ice Cube back together because they are the greatest odd couple in the world. I’m impatiently waiting for a script to be given to me. We have some great ideas.”

Outside of Hart and Cube, it’s unclear what other supporting cast members from the first two films will return. That said, Sumpter and Bruce McGill seem like pretty sure bets, having appeared in both prior Ride Along installments. Either way, Hart and Cube are clearly the straws that stir the Ride Along drink, so one assumes Universal will find a way to move forward as long as they’re both locked up. With Story back in the director’s chair, and the writers even returning for round three, it’s hard to imagine that fans of the series won’t be in for another fun ride.

Ride Along 3 is in development and has no current release date.
