Rian Johnson Says Jedi Cannibalism Is Canon And Now We're All Really Concerned

Over the years, the Star Wars canon has been expanded by a wide variety of media, from video games like Knights of the Old Republic to novelizations like Rogue One's Catalyst tie-in. These ancillary properties have improved the overall Star Wars canon in unique and unforeseen ways, and now it seems that Rian Johnson has added Jedi cannibalism to the Star Wars galaxy through a delightful new folk song. The editing process for The Last Jedi must have become a bit tedious in recent days because Rian Johnson clearly decided to take a break and team up with the indie folk band The Mountain Goats for that insanely bizarre song. The song centers on a Jedi who "wastes all of the other Jedi and eats their bones," which in layperson's terms means that it's about the final Jedi who has resorted to cannibalism. Try getting that image out of your head now.

Considering the fact that the upcoming Star Wars movie is called The Last Jedi, as well as the fact that Rian Johnson says this song is canon, we have questions. Big questions. Does this mean that Luke Skywalker went looking for the original Jedi Temple in The Force Awakens to find the remains of the ancient warriors buried there and feast on their bodies? We need answers, and we need them now.

I would be remiss for not mentioning the fact that cannibalism is already a canon phenomenon within the Star Wars universe -- albeit not in the films. The aforementioned Knights of the Old Republic games, Republic Commando, and even the Death Troopers novel all feature references to cannibalism, and many species on Luke Skywalker's home world of Tatooine have been known to practice it.

Will some sort of cannibalism factor into the narrative of The Last Jedi? Something tells me that it's not going to go down like it does in the song, but it's worth remembering that there's a little bit of truth hidden in every joke. If nothing else, we can rest easy knowing that Rian Johnson has a deep understanding of the Star Wars universe, and a willingness to have some fun with the existing lore.
