Netflix’s adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock’s Rebecca offers a first look at the upcoming romantic thriller. Based on Daphne du Maurier’s gothic novel, Rebecca was adapted into a 1940 film by Hitchcock and starred Laurence Olivier, Joan Fontaine, and Judith Anderson. Hailed as one the iconic filmmaker’s best works, Rebecca took home Oscars for Best Picture and Best Cinematography. In 2018, it was announced Netflix would give the noir tale a remake treatment. Directed by Ben Wheatly, Rebecca has revealed the first look at Netflix’s adaptation.

Posted by Baz Bamigboye (per Daily Mail), photos from Netflix’s Rebecca offers a glance at Lily James (Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again), Armie Hammer (The Social Network), and Kristin Scott Thomas, in their respective roles in Rebecca. Slated to premiere October 21 on Netflix, Rebecca follows a nameless heroine (James), who hastily marries widower Maxim de Winter (Hammer) after they meet on vacation on the Riviera. Navigating a newly married life on her husband’s estate, Mrs. de Winter finds herself haunted by the shadow of Rebecca, her aristocrat husband's dead first wife.

Penned by Jane Goldman, Rebecca also stars Keeley Hawes, Sam Riley, Bill Paterson, and Tom Goodman-Hill. Netflix appears adamant about padding its catalog with original content for the fall season. The streaming service will release Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial of The Chicago 7 on October 16. Furthermore, David Fincher’s Mank and horror movie Cadaver are also expected to release on Netflix later this year. As it stands, it remains to be seen how the creative forces behind Rebecca will stay faithful to the source material while adopting concepts from Hitchcock’s classic. Overall, the first images from Rebecca add further anticipation to Netflix’s upcoming psychological thriller.
