The winner will be announced Jan. 20 at the PGA Awards.

The Producers Guild of America on Monday announced the nominees for its award for Outstanding Producer of Documentary Theatrical Motion Pictures.

The nominees include three films that focus on nature and the environment: Chasing Coral, Earth: One Amazing Day and Jane, a portrait of pioneering primatologist Jane Goodall. Two other films examine the civil war in Syria: Cries From Syria outlines the course of the war and the refugees left in its wake, and City of Ghosts tells the story ofthe citizen journalists who reported on the city of Raqaa while it was under ISIS rule.


Rounding out the list of nominees are Joshua: Teenager vs. Superpower, which concerns a teenage activist in Hong Kong, and The Newspaperman: The Life and Times of Ben Bradlee, which looks at the influential Washington Post editor, who also appears this season in Steven Spielberg's narrative feature The Post, where he is played by Tom Hanks.


Netflix, with Coral and Joshua, and HBO, with Syria and Newspaperman, both scored two nominations each. Earth comes from BBC Earth Films; IFC Films and Amazon are distributing Ghosts; and Abramorama and National Geographic are handling Jane.

The films are currently being vetted to determine the eligibility of individual producers on each, and the winner of the award will be announced Jan. 20 at the 29th annual Producers Guild Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. At the event, the PGA also will honor Donna Langley with its Milestone Award and producer Charles Roven with its David O. Selznick Award.


Nominations in the PGA’s theatrical feature, animated film and television categories will be announced Jan. 5.
In the run-up to the awards, the PGA and The Players Club will host their second annual East Coast Nominees Celebration on Jan. 16.
Last season’s winner in the documentary feature category was O.J.: Made in America, produced by Ezra Edelman and Caroline Waterlow.
