The Purge will continue for another year on USA.

The cable network has picked up a second season of the dystopian thriller based on James DeMonaco's movie franchise. The pickup comes just ahead of the show's first-season finale on Tuesday night.

"USA Network is so proud to be the television home for the iconic franchise The Purge," Chris McCumber, president, Entertainment Networks for NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment, said Tuesday in a statement. "The partnership and creative trust of [executive producer] Jason Blum and everyone at Blumhouse Television and Universal Pictures ensured The Purge's successful transition from film to TV — and along with Universal Cable Productions, we look forward to digging even deeper into the mythology in season two."

The Purge has performed well for USA and is currently the cabler's top-rated drama series. It is averaging 2.3 million viewers, 1.2 million of whom are adults 18-49 (which translates to a 0.9 rating), with seven days of delayed viewing.

"James DeMonaco has done it again: The propulsive and compelling story he created for season one of The Purge truly resonated with audiences in a significant way," said Blum, whose Blumhouse Productions produces the series with Universal Cable Productions. "We are thrilled to embark on season two and can't wait to bring more of James' vision to USA and fans of The Purge."

In addition to DeMonaco and Blum, season one's executive producers also include Thomas Kelly; Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form of Platinum Dunes; and Sebastian K. Lemercier.

The Purge joins the recently renewed Queen of the South; Suits and spinoff Second City; The Sinner; Mr. Robot (whose final season is in 2019); Unsolved; and the upcoming Treadstone in USA's scripted lineup. Anthologies The Sinner and Unsolved are awaiting word on renewal.
