The latest image from Marvel and Netflix’s The Punisher gives fans another look at the series’ flashback sequences, which will take them back in in time to Frank Castle’s (Jon Bernthal) time in the military. And after Bernthal was noticeably absent from The Defenders – Marvel’s latest Netflix series which brought together almost all of the important characters from the street level sub-universe of the MCU – fans are understandably anxious to catch back up with The Punisher again. Fortunately, they won’t have to wait much longer before Frank returns to television screens everywhere, with Marvel and Netflix currently gearing up to release the first full season of their Punisher spinoff solo series online sometime this year.

No premiere date for The Punisher has been announced as of yet, but as more and more details and trailers for the series are released, it feels like only a matter of time now before fans find out exactly when the series will be making its premiere. And with only a few more months left in 2017, it’s likely that Marvel and Netflix are even closer to releasing The Punisher on the streaming platform than fans might be expecting.

In anticipation of its release, Empire Online has officially unveiled a brand new image from The Punisher online today. Unlike previous images and posters for the highly-anticipated series as well, the new image takes fans right into the thick of one of its presumably intense flashback sequences, with the series set to simultaneously focus on a modern day story of Frank in New York City while offering a look back into his military days. With so much about the series being shrouded in secrecy for a majority of this year, the reveal that The Punisher would have such a heavy militaristic component to it came as a bit of a surprise to those who might have just been expecting it to be just a dark, bloody show about Frank hunting down bad guys in New York. But considering just how psychological of a character Frank Castle is in the comics and has also been portrayed as being by Bernthal, it’s clear that his time in the military will prove to be integral in truly understanding and delving deep into the characters’ tormented psyche.

Bernthal made waves amongst the comic book community when he made his debut as the character in the second season of Daredevil, with many calling him a pitch-perfect take on the beloved character from the comics, who had previously suffered through a number of underwhelming live-action adaptations. And currently, The Punisher is shaping up to be unlike any of the previous Marvel/Netflix series, thanks to both the unavoidable darkness surrounding Frank Castle and this flashback-heavy storytelling structure. Whether or not that unique quality will help The Punisher to live up to fans’ expectations, however, remains to be seen.

The Punisher season 1 premieres on Netflix in 2017. Premiere dates for the new seasons of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron First have not yet been announced.
