New plot details for Predator 5 hint that the movie might take place in the past. The first Predator from director John McTiernan came out in 1987 and starred Arnold Schwarzenegger. Schwarzenegger's role as Dutch has become one of his most iconic characters right up there with The Terminator and Conan the Barbarian. Similarly, the Yautja (Predators) became one of the most recognizable movie monsters of the decade.

The Predators have shown up in five films since 1987, none of which were able to match the critical praise of the original. Predator 2, The Predators, and most recently The Predator attempted to continue the mythos behind the ancient creatures, but each of the films got mixed to negative reviews. Even 2004's Alien vs Predator and its sequel Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem couldn't get fans back on board, but the franchise isn't done yet. While fans were worried that the Predator franchise was officially dead after Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, it was recently announced that Predator 5 is officially in development.

Now, the first plot details for the film have potentially been revealed. According to AVP Galaxy, Predator 5 will be set in the past before settlers stole Native Americans' land. It seems that Predator 5 may be going under the working title "Skulls" which is said to follow "a Comanche woman who goes against gender norms and traditions to become a warrior.

With Predator 5 only being announced a few days ago, there isn't a whole lot known about the film just yet. Dan Trachtenberg, who is most known for directing 10 Cloverfield Lane and the series premiere of The Boys, has signed on to direct the new Predator film. Trachtenberg has been working on Predator 5 for almost four years but wasn't thrilled when word broke prematurely that the film was being developed. Predator 5's script is being written by Patrick Aison, which lines up with AVP Galaxy's theory that Skulls and Predator 5 are actually the same movie. While 2018's The Predator left the door open for a sequel, it seems that Predator 5 will not continue that storyline.

While these potential plot details sound promising, they haven't been confirmed by Disney, so they should be taken with a grain of salt. Trachtenberg seems like a solid choice for a director even though 10 Cloverfield Lane was his first and only feature film credit as a director, but his Predator film could make or break the franchise. Disney is now in control and likely won't waste time and money on another film if Trachtenberg's doesn't make an impact on audiences. With all that in mind, setting Predator 5 in the past could do just that and could be a good way to refresh the franchise.
