Powers has had a pretty troubled path to the small screen. It was originally picked up by FX in 2011 with a cast that included Jason Patric and Lucy Punch, but the project was eventually dropped and it fell into limbo for a while. Then, in March of this year, it was announced that the series would instead debut on the Sony Playstation Network starring Sharlto Copley and Susan Heyward.

The show, for those who don’t know, is based on the comic book of the same name from writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Michael Avon Oeming. It’s basically a police procedural set in world with superpowered individuals called “Powers.” One of the two protagonists, Christian Walker (Copley), used to be a Power, but now that he’s powerless, he works as a police officer in the Powers division alongside his partner Deena Pilgrim (Heyward).

Since Powers‘ transition from FX to the Playstation Network, there’s been a lot of skepticism surrounding the project. After all, the PSN isn’t exactly a tried and true television network – this is its first TV show – and Sharlto Copley, despite being liked for his work in Neill Blomkamp’s movies (District 9 especially), doesn’t exactly look like the spitting image of his comic book counterpart.

But that may be about to change. Last night at the Powers New York Comic Con panel, Sony and creator Brian Michael Bendis debuted the very first trailer for the series to a packed house. Check it out above.

While the footage looks a little rough around the edges – it’s clear that they don’t have the budget that they might’ve had on a bigger network – it also looks pretty darn interesting. The first two episode of this ten-episode series have been directed by David Slade (30 Days of Night), and the show seems to have a fittingly cinematic neo-noir look.

The cast isn’t half-bad either. Besides Copley and Heyward, there’s Eddie Izzard (Hannibal), Noah Taylor (Game of Thrones), Adam Godley (Breaking Bad), and more. There are obviously no A-listers here, but there are a lot of excellent character actors, and that’s probably preferable when your budget isn’t massive.

Brian Michael Bendis recently said that the series will be “rated R, sometimes a hard R,” and that certainly comes through in the trailer. While FX has been known to get pretty edgy from time to time, even their shows have yet to cross over into f-bomb territory. So, at the very least, Powers‘ transition from FX to PSN seems to have freed the series to push into more mature boundaries, which is definitely something that matches the comic book.

Powers will premiere in December 2014 on the Playstation Network.
