Netflix releases the Point Blank movie trailer and poster, teasing the remake of Fred Cavayé’s 2010 French film of the same name. Directed by Joe Lynch, the thriller features the MCU’s Anthony Mackie and Frank Grillo. Last July, Marcia Gay Harden was cast in a supporting role.

In Point Blank, Mackie portrays a nurse named Paul. When his wife is kidnapped, he’s forced to help a recouping murder suspect, Abe (Grillo), escape from custody at a hospital. Paul learns that dirty cops are hunting down Abe, which complicates matters as he attempts to reunite with his wife. For Cavayé’s original film, Gilles Lellouche starred as the nurse and Roschdy Zem portrayed the hospitalized criminal. The film was produced for $10.3 million and failed to make a profit at the box office. Netflix’s remake was reportedly produced for $12 million and features Teyonah Parris (Candyman) in a supporting role. Point Blank’s screenplay was written by Adam G. Simon, who previously wrote the 2015 thriller Man Down starring Shia LaBeouf, Jai Courtney, and Gary Oldman.

Netflix released a trailer for Point Blank. Early on, Mackie’s Paul romantically converses with his wife (Parris), and a subsequent home attack serves as the inciting incident. Paul then receives instructions to break out Grillo’s Abe, setting in motion an unorthodox buddy narrative as the two men work together, and attempt to understand each other’s motives. Midway through, a good cop/bad cop theme comes into play, with red full screen graphics hyping the drama. The trailer’s back half highlights the comedic camaraderie between Abe and Paul, as the former displays his physical athleticism while the latter shows off his wit. The trailer ends with another comedic moment involving a foul-mouth elder spouting off after Abe and Paul rip off her ride. Check out the Point Blank trailer and poster below.

Point Blank was co-produced by Joe Carnahan, who reportedly left Bad Boys 3 due to creative clashes with star Will Smith. Grillo is also one of Point Blank’s producers, and he also co-produced Carnahan’s 2019 film Boss Level, in which he stars alongside Mel Gibson and Naomi Watts. In recent years, Grillo has evolved into a bankable action star, and he’s perhaps best known for headlining the The Purge franchise, and also for portraying Brock Rumlow in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, and Avengers: Endgame. Meanwhile, Mackie stars as Sam Wilson aka. Falcon in the MCU, and will be featured in Marvel Studios' Disney+ limited series Falcon and Winter Soldier.

Based on Point Blank’s trailer, the film appears to be a traditional action thriller that will appeal to fans of both Grillo and Mackie. Just as the 2017 Netflix film Message from the King hyped up Chadwick Boseman as an action star prior to Black Panther’s release, Point Blank could function as a low-budget promotional tool for upcoming projects featuring Grillo and Mackie. At the very least, Netflix is simply capitalizing on the pop culture momentum for both stars with Point Blank.

Point Blank premieres Friday July 12 on Netflix.
