A Quiet Place 2 has officially started production. The first film premiered in 2018, slipping somewhat under the radar before breaking out as a surprise hit. Co-written and directed by John Krasinski, the film told the story of a family struggling to survive in a world plagued by terrifying creatures. With the monsters hunting by sound, the family are forced to live in silence. Krasinski also starred in the film, alongside his real-life wife, Emily Blunt. Their children were played by Noah Jupe and Millicent Simmonds. In the wake of A Quiet Place's critical and commercial success, a sequel was rapidly greenlit.

Details of where the film will go next, or how the world will be expanded upon, remains firmly under wraps. It has been confirmed, however, that Jupe, Simmonds, and Blunt will all reprise their roles. Krasinski's character was dramatically killed in the first film's third act, so he will not appear outside of potential flashbacks and the like. Unless, that is, he reprises his secondary role as one of the monsters. The former star of The Office will, however, will pen the script and return as director.

As reported by ComingSoon, Paramount Pictures announced that production has officially begun on the film. They also confirmed that the returning cast will joined by The Dark Knight trilogy's Cillian Murphy as well as Child's Play's Brian Tyree Henry in a mystery role. They also reiterated the official 2020 release date. It was previously reported that filming would begin in the summer. Though no new details were released, except to Blunt, fans of the original will no doubt be pleased to learn that production has moved significantly forward. And that some footage will be on the way, hopefully before the end of the year.

Krasinski also stars in Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, which was recently renewed for season 3 by Amazon. Blunt also recently finished filming with Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson on Disney's Jungle Cruise. Neither are as busy as franchise newcomer Tyree Henry, however. As well as Child's Play, he will feature prominently alongside Joaquin Phoenix in Joker and in the MonsterVerse follow-up, Godzilla vs. Kong.

Sequels are notoriously tricky beasts. That goes double for horror franchises, which often fall victim to diminishing returns. A Quiet Place had a unique premise that allowed it to stand up, especially amongst the wave of similar horror films such as Netflix's Bird Box. In that regard, it's only a matter of time before the refreshingly new take on the genre becomes overly familiar. The first film, however, certainly left enough up in the air to warrant at least one more outing. After all, the film teased, for good and for ill, other survivors out there in the world. It also offered a hopeful ending in Blunt's character finally realizing a way the human race could potentially fight back rather than simply hide.

Whatever the case, Krasinski previously assured that A Quiet Place 2 won't be a typical sequel. It will also differ from such sequels as Jaws and Alien. Fans, however, will be able to see for themselves, silently from the edges of their seats, when A Quiet Place 2 finally hits theaters.
