The character of Green Lantern has been frequently hinted at throughout the Arrowverse on The CW. These nods have included references to Ferris Air, talk of a pilot having gone missing, and even Coast City, where the character of Hal Jordan comes from. But executive producer Marc Guggenheim has made it clear that there are no plans for Green Lantern to appear in the DC TV Universe.

While there may currently be no plans to bring the ring-bearing hero to television that doesn’t mean the references are going to stop anytime soon. In fact, Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern, was one of the characters believed to be the mystery character rumored to be introduced at the end of Legends of Tomorrow season 1. And while Hourman eventually filled that role, another new addition to the season 2 cast will share a very close connection with Scott’s Green Lantern

In a new interview with Comicbook.com, Lance Henriksen, one of the actors who will play Obsidian in Legends of Tomorrow season 2, has confirmed his character is indeed the son of Green Lantern Alan Scott.

“It’s all in there. It’s all in there, every bit of it. Yeah, being Green Lantern’s son and all that stuff and him being gay is all in there. It’s treated, honestly, kind of ungently. It’s a real thing….Even one of my lines says ‘If you’re lucky enough to find love again, after anything has ever happened to you, well, embrace it.’ [Obsidian] says ‘Son, he’s waiting for me at home.'”

Legends of Tomorrow: Lance Henriksen Confirms Obsidian is Green Lantern’s Son

Obsidian, who also goes by the name Todd Rice in the comics, has the ability to merge his body with his shadow, granting him superhuman skills like flight, the ability to envelop enemies, and cover the whole world in darkness by increasing his size. Legends of Tomorrow will feature two versions of Obsidian: a younger and an older version. The first version the Legends will encounter is played by Dan Payne, while Henriksen will play the older version.

If Legends of Tomorrow does in fact state that Alan Scott is Rice’s father is it possible the showrunners have changed their minds on bringing (a) Green Lantern into the DC TV Universe? It’s also worth considering that the show could just refer to his father as Alan Scott, but never make any mention of his superhero alter-ego.

With a resume spanning 200 films, Henriksen ia veteran actor who is sure to bring some real depth to the role of Obsidian, a complex character by nature. It’s a role that will require him to channel an individual who struggles with the fact he was abused as a child, was a law-breaker before joining the JSA, and is also a gay superhero. As if that wasn’t enough to get audiences excited about the appearance of Obsidian on Legends of Tomorrow, the news of his parentage will likely have many fans sitting up and taking notice.

The Flash season 3 will premiere Tuesday October 4 at 8pm on The CW, Arrow season 5 will premiere in the same timeslot on Wednesday October 5, Supergirl season 2 on Monday October 10, and Legends of Tomorrow season 2 on Thursday October 13.
