Season 1 of Showtime’s gothic horror series Penny Dreadful spent most of its time introducing us to the characters of the series, their relationships, as well as setting up their struggles for season 2. The season ended with most of the characters coming to terms with who they were and what they were meant to be, and left audiences waiting until the next season to find out what the consequences of those realizations might be.

Ethan (Josh Hartnett) transformed into a werewolf, Malcolm (Timothy Dalton) sacrificed his own daughter in order to save Vanessa (Eva Green) – who questioned whether or not she truly wanted to be normal – and Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway) found the mate for his Creation (Rory Kinnear) in the ill-fated and deathly sick Brona (Billie Piper).

The featurette above delves farther into the story of this season than the trailer did, which focused mostly on teasing Helen McCrory’s Evelyn Poole (a.k.a. Madame Kali) becoming a major threat to our lead cast of characters as she and some of her fellow servants of the devil (including her daughter, Hecate, played by Sarah Greene) prepare to wreak havoc upon them all.

This new season is clearly turning the tables on our main cast, as this time around, the hunters have become the hunted (which may or may not lead to a specifically fragile Vanessa losing her soul. Season 2 also seems to be taking the pace of the first and increasing it by ten as McCrory teases, “Now the world’s set up and the train leaves the station… and it goes very, very fast.“

Penny Dreadful was a strong ratings hit for Showtime when it premiered, which led to a quick season 2 order as the freshman season continued to hold onto consistently strong numbers all the way through. It’ll be interesting to see if that success carries over into season 2, especially since this season looks to be shaking things up in every possible way both for the characters involved and for the audience watching.

Whether or not Evelyn Poole and her cohorts will be successful in their mission this season remains unknown for now, but if one thing is for sure, season 2 of Penny Dreadful doesn’t look to be holding back.

Penny Dreadful returns to Showtime on April 16th, 2015 @10pm.
