Starz is considering multiple Outlander spin-off ideas. Based on Diana Gabaldon's book series of the same name, Outlander became a massive hit for Starz when it first premiered in August 2014. It follows English nurse Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe) after she magically travels from 1945 all the way back to 1743 Scotland. Once she gets over the strangeness of her new surroundings, she falls in love with Highlander Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan). Thus begins their epic, star-crossed romance, which serves as the backbone for Outlander. Fans have fallen in love with Claire, Jamie, and the family they've slowly accumulated over the seasons.

Outlander capped off its fifth season earlier this month with Claire and Jamie finding some semblance of peace after an emotional stretch of episodes that saw Claire attacked and Jamie losing a beloved friend. They might be alright now, but fans aren't expecting that to last once season 6 finally arrives. Series creator Ronald D. Moore recently confirmed Outlander season 6 will delve into the Revolutionary War, as Claire and Jamie have traveled to America. This falls in line with the sixth book in the Outlander series, A Breath of Snow and Ashes. So far, each season of Outlander has followed one of Gabaldon's books, meaning Moore and his writers have at least a few more seasons of content to get through (the book series currently contains eight books, with a ninth on the way).

Outlander proper might have a few years left in it, but Starz is evidently looking to expand the universe. While talking to Collider, Moore teased the prospect of an Outlander spin-off by confirming "Starz is interested." When pressed about what said spin-off might be about, Moore simply said, "We have more than one idea, we have a couple of ideas... We're still in internal conversations, so we're not really prepared to go out and say what it is."

Considering how common spin-offs are for major television shows (see: The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones), it isn't surprising that Starz is pursuing one for Outlander. The fantasy-romance series remains one of Starz's biggest, and it would make sense that the network wants to capitalize on its popularity. Additionally, there are plenty of side characters within Outlander who would be excellent picks to headline their own show; it's no wonder that Moore and his team have several ideas.

At this point, fans are likely eagerly awaiting Outlander season 6. Seeing as season 5 ended recently, it'll be some time before the next batch of episodes arrives. Also, the coronavirus pandemic might further delay Outlander's return, as it has forced several film and television productions to shut down for the time being. It could also impact any spin-off plans, though Moore's comments confirm things are still in the very early stages. For the time being, Outlander fans will just have to wait and see what happens.
