The Fast and the Furious director Rob Cohen wants to return to direct the final movie in the franchise, which right now should be Fast & Furious 10. The Fast and Furious movies have become some of the most successful movies on the planet in recent years, as the seventh and eighth installments of the unlikely blockbuster franchise have both grossed more than $1 billion worldwide. It's Universal's golden franchise and it all started with one movie nearly 17 years ago. Now, the original's director reveals that he would love to return for the final installment, whatever that may be and whenever that may be.

Rob Cohen only directed The Fast and the Furious, but has remained active over the years and is currently promoting his upcoming movie Hurricane Heist. During a recent interview, he was asked about possibly returning to helm another Fast and Furious movie at some point. While he makes it clear that this is only something he wants, he thinks it would be cool to bookend the franchise, by having him direct the first and last entry. Here's what he had to say about it.

"I always wished Universal would come back to me to direct the last one."

This is an interesting proposition for quite a few reasons. For one, it's presumed that Fast and Furious 10 will be the final movie in the franchise. The movie was originally dated for April 2021, but Fast and Furious 9 was bumped to 2020 because of the Hobbs spin-off that shoots later this year, and will arrive in theaters next year. In any case, if Fast and Furious 10 is actually going to be the last installment, Rob Cohen may have missed his chance to direct already, as Justin Lin, who previously directed four Fast and Furious movies, looks to be lined up to direct the next two installments.

While it hasn't been formally announced by Universal, Vin Diesel announced it, without actually saying it, that Justin Lin will be back for the ninth and tenth movies. Lin previously directed The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Fast and Furious, Fast Five and Fast and Furious 6. James Wan took over for Furious 7 and F. Gary Gray helmed last year's The Fate of the Furious. Though, as Rob Cohen points out in the interview, Universal may not let the franchise end ever. Or at least until it stops making money.

"If Comcast's Board of Directors ever allows them to end the goose that laid the golden egg. [laughs]"

Indeed, it seems very likely that much of the cast would want to move on after Fast and Furious 10, but they could always continue on with spin-offs, like Hobbs, or reboot the franchise with new characters in some way. Either way, if it's ever going to end, Rob Cohen is waiting by the phone for the call to come back.
