Only One War Matters in Game of Thrones Season 7 Finale Trailer
The Game of Thrones season 7 finale is coming – and the trailer for the episode teases a major meeting between the rulers of Westeros. For a number of seasons, Game of Thrones followed the roadmap laid out by George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire book series, telling the stories of Cersei Lannister, Jon Snow, and Daenerys Targaryen on both sides of the Narrow Sea. While many nobles in Westeros squabbled over the Iron Throne in King’s Landing, Jon learned of, and began preparing for, a larger war – the one between life and death itself.
With the Night King getting closer and closer to the wall, season 7 has seen the King in the North turn to the Mother of Dragons for aid, while she herself attempts to reclaim her birthright from Cersei as the queen of the seven kingdoms. However, the latest episode of Game of Thrones, ‘Beyond the Wall’, convinced Daenerys to turn her armies toward the North and help defend the realm of men from the Night King and his army of the dead. Now, the trailer for the season 7 finale seems to tease a meeting between the three (living) major players in Westeros.
HBO debuted the trailer [above] for the Game of Thrones season 7 finale following tonight’s episode, and it teases a meeting between Jon Snow and Cersei Lannister. Though it’s unclear whether Daenerys is in attendance, it appears at least her Hand will be, with Tyrion Lannister seeming to be at the meeting as well. Other shots from the trailer visit Sansa Stark at Winterfell as well as the Unsullied and Dothraki on a field of battle.
It’s difficult to discern where exactly Jon and Cersei are meeting in the trailer. Jon and Daenerys’ plan was to retrieve a wight from beyond the Wall in order to prove that the Night King exists – and part of that plan was to meet with Cersei in King’s Landing to reveal their proof. While it does seem as though Tyrion, Varys, and Theon Greyjoy are sailing toward King’s Landing and the Red Keep, the place in which they meet Cersei is in ruins. So, it could be the Great Sept of Baelor, which Cersei blew up with wildfire last season, or it could be somewhere in Harrenhal, a castle famously destroyed with dragonfire just north of King’s Landing.
Of course, the location could just as well be somewhere entirely different. Considering how fast the characters move around Westeros in season 7 – which has been a complaint from many viewers, in fact – the meeting could be anywhere in the seven kingdoms. Plus, what’s more exciting about this meeting than the location, is that it finally brings the major players in Westeros together to discuss the real threat to their realm. As Jon urges, “There is only one war that matters.” How willing Cersei is to listen to Jon, however, remains to be seen.
As for the other scenes teased in the season 7 trailer. Sansa and Arya have been at adds in Winterfell, with the former trying to keep the lords of the North placated while Jon is away and the latter seemingly trying to learn where her sister’s true loyalties lie. Last we saw of the Unsullied, they had taken Casterly Rock too easily because the Lannister forces had all but abandoned the castle, while the Dothraki helped Daenerys win the Loot Train Battle. What becomes of Arya and Sansa, as well as what Daenerys has up her sleeve for the Unsullied and the Dothraki, remains to be seen until the season 7 finale airs next week.
