There has been a big push over the last few years to bring even more roles to big screen for women. The important thing has not just been supplying more roles, but prominent ones as well. A prime example can be seen with Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, which featured Rey (Daisy Ridley) as the lead of one of the biggest franchises of all time. There is also the trend of remaking or rebooting franchises that have been dead for years. Ghostbusters took a shot at taking the original concept and bringing it to the modern day with an all-female cast.
Unfortunately for all parties involved, Ghostbusters was not the hit that it needed to be, but that has not derailed other plans. Ocean’s 8 is set to be an all-female continuation from the trilogy starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt, but even as the cast grew, there was not any word on when it would hit theaters until now.
Ocean’s 8 has officially been given a midsummer 2018 release date according to Jeff Sneider of Mashable. Gary Ross is set to direct the female cast and his film will hit theaters on June 8, 2018. Current stars include Sandra Bullock (The Blind Side), Cate Blanchett (Carol), Anne Hathaway (Interstellar), Rihanna (Battleship), Sarah Paulson (American Horror Story), Mindy Kaling (The Mindy Project), Helena Bonham Carter (Fight Club), and Awkwafina (Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising).

While there is not much info at this point on the plot, Ocean’s 8 will have connections to the previous trilogy with Bullock playing Danny Ocean’s sister. It has also been said that Blanchett’s character could have connections to Rusty, or simply serve as a similar type of character in this new film. The rest of the ladies will likely be serving as the complementary members of the team that each have a special quality/ability to help pull off the heist.
The new release date will give the movie every chance to be a big hit at the box office, but it will not be without stiff competition. It will have been 11 years since Ocean’s 13 was in theaters and similar attempts to revitalize a franchise have not always worked. The film will likely try to capture a large female audience while also keeping previous fans interested, but this is a stacked time frame for the film to hit. The young Han Solo film hits the week before, with the Bumblebee solo film coming out the same day as Ocean’s 8. If that was not enough, Toy Story 4, Jurassic World 2, and an untitled Fox/Marvel film all come out in the three following weeks. There should still be interest given the cast and name recognition, but just how much will depend on how well the marketing campaign works.
Ocean’s 8 opens in U.S. theaters on June 8, 2018.
