Looking back, it seems that DC Comics fans are in for even more than they might’ve thought possible following the release of Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. The new Superman story didn’t work for all fans, but its function as a launchpad for a potential Justice League movie universe was clear; and DC and Warner Bros. wasted little time in capitalizing on it. But there’s no mistaking what made it all possible: Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy, which proved there was a real demand for serious superheroes.

The connective tissue between that trilogy and Man of Steel was evident: the story was concocted by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer, both of whom had developed the story and screenplay of each Batman film, along with Christopher’s brother Jonathan. At the time, all parties claimed that the story – and world – being formed was Snyder’s, not Nolan’s; but suspicions persisted that Nolan’s veteran presence was a major factor.

Yet as marketing and development of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice continues, Nolan’s name is being heard less and less often, with Zack and Deborah Snyder, along with producer Charles Roven clearly leading the charge (and Goyer alone handling script duties). In fact, as the movie slate has expanded to include Aquaman, a new Green Lantern, The Flash, and even new solo Superman and Batman movies, Nolan’s absence is becoming even more noticeable.

Now, it seems we know why. Jonathan Nolan has put the question to rest, when asked by ComingSoon if he or his brother were currently working on any upcoming WB/DC project:

“I love those guys and my brother was involved in ‘Man of Steel’ with Zack [Snyder] and David [Goyer]… I kind of feel like that chapter for us is closed.”
That news is not entirely surprising, since Christopher’s lack of real ‘passion for comic book mythology’ has been quite well-chronicled. And it’s quite clear that Warner Bros. deems Snyder a suitable new supervisor for their movie universe, handing him duties to not one, but two Justice League films. As far as we can tell, neither Nolan is hurting for work at present, either.

The future beyond Interstellar is open for Christoper Nolan, while Jonathan is preparing his feature film directorial debut with Westworld. Still, it’s worth noting the end of Nolan’s tenure as WB and DC’s point man, as there are sure to be movie fans who fear that the future is now a bit more uncertain – even with (or because of) Snyder taking the helm.

Are you concerned to see Nolan leave the Justice League movie universe behind, or has Zack Snyder and his team shown they have a vision they’re set to execute on? Jonathan Nolan did leave the door open to potentially working on another DC Comics property down the road, so… never say never.
