Spock actor Zachary Quinto reveals there may not be a Star Trek 4 after Star Trek Beyond. Quinto is currently appearing in Aardvark, a new indie film about a man with mental illness. It’s far from his first time in a smaller movie, but Quinto is probably better known for his work on one of the biggest franchises of all time: Star Trek. He has starred in the three most recent Star Trek films so far, as the iconic Spock, best friend to Captain James Kirk (Chris Pine), and fans love his new take on the classic sci-fi character.

The future of the franchise is currently in doubt, however, after Star Trek Beyond failed to hit the kind of box office numbers that Paramount was hoping for. The film was still a success, and both critics and audiences gave it favorable reviews, but it seems that Star Trek 4‘s future may not be bright. Star Trek co-star Zoe Saldana recently revealed her hopes that the movie will get made and the she will return to the franchise, and now Quinto has also said the he hopes to play Spock a fourth time.

Appearing on Today in order to promote Aardvark, Quinto confirmed that a script is being written, but that there is “no guarantee” it will make it to the big screen.

I know that they are working on a script for another one and we’ll see how that all plays out, but the nice thing about that experience is that the time in between those big tentpole films allows us to go off and cultivate a lot of different creative experiences for ourselves. … I’m hopeful that we’ll do another one, but there’s no guarantee.
The script that Quinto mentioned is being written by Simon Pegg, who tweeted about the project a few months ago, and has been praised by Chris Hemsworth (who plays Kirk’s father).

Although Quinto is careful not to confirm anything about the project, recent news about the script and pitch would seem to suggest that Paramount is moving forward with Star Trek 4, or that at the very least, they have not cancelled it entirely just yet. Quinto’s comments confirm that the actor would be happy to return as Spock, but that’s not too much of a surprise. Quinto is also quick to point out that the time in between the films gives the actors a chance to work on other projects (Saldana is also in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and Pine is working on Wonder Woman), so there is no rush to get Star Trek 4 onto the big screen.
