No deadpool/x-men crossover movie in near future

Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the screenwriters and executive producers of the blockbuster Deadpool, have tempered fans' expectations for a full on crossover between the merc with a mouth and the related X-Men movie franchise.

The duo informed The Playlist that while Deadpool 2 may see some X-Men pop up in small roles as Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead did in the first film, there are no immediate plans for an X-Men/Deadpool franchise crossover film.

Using the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a model, Reese explained that it took two Iron Man films to set up The Avengers and called that "a very prudent path" for them to follow as well. Reese also cited the X-Men movies' current timeline as an issue (X-Men: Apocalypse is set in the 1980s while Deadpool takes place in the present day).

"It’s a timeline that will eventually catch up I would imagine,” Wernick said, adding that "maybe we’ll see more X-Men playing in Deadpool’s sandbox and probably Deadpool playing in their sandbox at some point."

More importantly, Wernick points out that "Deadpool’s now become a brand and franchise unto himself, independent of the X-Men and that’s great. ... And that gives the studio two franchises in one, but I think it is its own franchise, and you’ll see synergy between those two properties, but they’re two very distinct brands.”

Reese and Wernick confirmed that Cable will indeed be in Deadpool 2 and that they're "having a great time writing" the character. While Cable may be in the sequel, the duo did shoot down the possibility of seeing previously rumored villains Garrison Kane, Sluggo, and Wire in it, but held out the possibility of them appearing in another future sequel.
